Chapter 230:
I threw the car door open and rushed out, my leather shoes sinking into the damp grass with a heavy thud.
With the headlights cutting through the darkness, I spotted Lianne immediately, curled beside the gravestone.
A sharp ache struck my chest all at once, panic tightening around me.
“Lianne, are you alright?”
I dropped to my knees beside her, my hands shaking as I ripped the filthy cloth from her mouth and hurriedly loosened the ropes biting into her wrists. As I carefully lifted her and caught sight of her face, my breath hitched.
The features that had once been so delicate were now swollen and bruised beyond recognition, deep cuts still bleeding, streaked with dirt and tears, leaving her in a devastating state.
A heavy, suffocating pain settled in my chest, each breath dragging sharper than the last.
“It’s okay, Lianne. I’m here. I’ll take you home.”
Without hesitation, I gathered her into my arms and strode toward the car, intent on getting her to the hospital as fast as possible.

But she gripped my sleeve tightly, her nails pressing into the fabric.
She forced her head toward the scattered remains on the ground, her voice so faint and hoarse it barely carried. “My dad’s ashes…”
Following her line of sight, I saw Marion’s grave torn open, pale remains scattered across the muddy ground, stark beneath the harsh light.
A surge of fury rose within me, violent and uncontrollable, while my gaze turned cold and sharp.
Those monsters had desecrated her father’s grave right in front of her.
“Don’t worry. I’ll have people come and collect everything.” I forced the anger down, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to her cold forehead. “Let me take you to the hospital now, alright?”
At my words, the tension in her body slowly eased. As if all her strength had finally given out, she slumped against me, weak and unresisting.
Not long after, she lost consciousness in my arms.
At the hospital, outside the emergency room, the red light glowed harshly.
I sank onto a bench, burying my hands in my hair, a crushing wave of self-blame overtaking me.
If I had noticed sooner, could this have been avoided?
Lowering my gaze, I suddenly noticed a dark stain on the knee of my black suit.
It was Lianne’s blood, a deep, heavy red beneath the sterile lights.
I had no idea how long I sat there waiting, but eventually, the red light went dark and the doctor stepped out, looking worn and drained.
I sprang to my feet, grabbing his shoulder, my voice unsteady. “How is Lianne?”
The doctor pulled off his mask, let out a tired breath, and looked at me with something complicated in his eyes. “What kind of husband are you? Your wife is already four months pregnant, and you allowed her to go through something like this?”
“Pregnant?” The word struck me like a blow, scattering my thoughts.
I stood there, frozen, my mind completely blank. It took me several seconds before I could force out another question. “What did you say? She’s pregnant?”
