Chapter 542

Chapter 542:
“No.” The refusal came immediately. “You just landed, and your leg’s still banged up, why are you running around? I’ll grab a cab home.”
She propped herself against the hallway wall and fished a cigarette from her bag. She didn’t light it, though, just rolled it back and forth between her fingers.
“It’s no big deal, honestly,” she said, her voice dripping with self-mockery. “Jeremy and I… that was just a one-night stand. Two adults having a bit of fun. Nothing worth remembering, let alone building on. But lately, he’s been acting all desperate, clinging to me like a lost puppy. It’s seriously off-putting.”
Watching her fake nonchalance made my heart hurt.
Tracy was the type who cared more the harder she tried to seem like she didn’t.
“Tracy,” I said softly, “if he ever crosses a line, you need to tell me. Promise me you won’t just suffer through it alone, alright?”
“Don’t worry about me.” She lifted her head, her eyes sliding past me toward the closed dining room door. Her voice turned wistful. “Lianne, men like Ethan, so devoted, don’t come around often. Jeremy’s not even in the same league. He’s a player, always spreading himself thin across too many women. I never planned to fall for someone like that anyway. And even if I did feel a tiny spark for him, I’d never bet my future on him.”

She gave a breezy wave, turned, and headed for the elevator.
I watched her slim, stubborn frame disappear around the corner before I pushed the door open and stepped into the private dining room.
Lianne’s POV:
The tension in the room was thick.
Jeremy sat in his seat with a half-full wine glass before him.
His head hung low and loose strands of hair fell over his eyes. He looked exhausted and broken.
Ethan was seated at the head of the table. When he noticed me walking in, he lifted his gaze and asked in a low voice, “Tracy is gone?”
“Yes.” I took my seat, then looked straight at Jeremy. “Jeremy, let Tracy go. You’re not right for each other.”
Jeremy’s hand tightened around the stem of his wine glass.
Eventually, he said in a strained voice, “Alright.”
“Then that’s the end of this matter,” Ethan said firmly.
He knew Jeremy well, and he knew me just as well.
Tracy was far more than my best friend. She was one of the very few people I truly cared about.
He would never stand by and watch his closest friend hurt someone so important to me.
I could see that Jeremy had genuinely fallen in love with Tracy this time.
But love was never something that could be forced onto another person.
After everything Tracy had endured, what she longed for most was stability and security. And unfortunately, that was the one thing Jeremy could never give her.
The air turned somber.
Jeremy barely ate anything before claiming there was an urgent matter at the company. Then he left.
