Chapter 828:
“We’ve already made concessions!” he finally blurted, trying to soften his tone. “She’s the one refusing to let this go! She insists on sending Rola to prison and ruining the Voss family’s reputation. Ethan, don’t be so heartless.”
His words were enough to ignite the anger simmering inside me. I let out a short, mocking laugh.
“Concessions?” My voice dripped with ridicule. “When you refused to spare her father years ago, did any of you even think about what might happen once the truth came to light? Now that justice has finally reached your doorstep, you suddenly expect forgiveness? That’s not how the world works.”
“Rola was manipulated! She’s already suffering enough! Isn’t that punishment enough?” Philip argued desperately, still trying to excuse her actions.
I was tired. Every extra sentence felt like wasted breath.
“When someone commits crimes, they face the consequences.” My expression stayed cold and unreadable. “Being sick doesn’t erase what Rola has done. If illness could excuse murder or arson, laws would be meaningless.”
The firmness in my voice finally made Philip panic. He knew better than anyone that the Thorn Pack had no chance of surviving the crisis awaiting it without my leadership.

“Fine…” he said between heavy breaths, his pride giving way to reluctant submission. “We’ll back off. We won’t interfere with Lianne anymore, and we won’t help Rola escape responsibility. I’ll even help you pressure Melisa into handing over the antidote.”
I looked at him, seeing nothing but greed hidden beneath the appearance of compromise. Disgust rose inside me.
“Worry about yourself.” I threw the words at him without warmth, then turned toward the bench at the end of the hallway. “I don’t believe a single thing that comes out of your mouth. As for the antidote, I’ll get it myself. I don’t need your help.”
Lowering myself onto the bench, I closed my eyes. Almost immediately, my thoughts drifted back to Lianne’s gentle kiss before I left. Little by little, the storm inside my heart finally began to quiet.
Lianne’s POV
The house felt unusually quiet after Ethan left.
I buried myself in the towering stack of work files, hoping endless spreadsheets and dry reports would distract me from the worry gnawing at my heart.
That evening, I stayed up late playing with Ruby and Silas, lingering beside them until their bright laughter faded into the steady rhythm of peaceful sleep. Only after they were tucked in did I return to the living room.
The flames in the fireplace danced softly, scattering warm but fleeting light across the cold marble floor.
I held my phone for a long while, my thumb hovering over the screen before I finally sent a short message. Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember to take some rest.
I didn’t want to ask about Rola. I certainly didn’t want to become another burden weighing on Ethan’s already exhausted heart.
His reply came almost immediately. Attached was a slightly blurry photo.
I zoomed in before I recognized what it was: Rola’s critical condition notice.
Deep coma. Whether she survives depends on tonight. Ethan’s message was terse, his words carefully held back.
Before I could type a reply, my phone rang.
