Chapter 949:
“What were you thinking? I can deal with this. I can continue playing along with Melisa. I can find another way to end all of this. But I cannot watch you go through that pain again. Do you understand me? I saw every episode you had. I watched your entire body shake from the agony while you bit down on your lip just to keep yourself quiet. You think I didn’t see it? You think it didn’t destroy me to watch you suffer?”
His desperation grew with every word. He reached for my bag with his free hand and began searching through it frantically. “Where is it? Where did you put the vial? Is it inside your bag? Did you leave it beside the bed? Just tell me where it is. I’ll get it for you.”
The sight of him losing control over his fear softened something deep inside me.
I gently caught the hand rummaging through my belongings. “Ethan, stop. Don’t look for it.”

Ethan abruptly stilled and lifted his eyes to mine, disbelief flashing across his face.
I held his gaze and confessed in an even voice, “I never swallowed the antidote.”
His expression hardened with confusion. “Then where did it go?”
“I gave it to you.”
The change in his face was immediate. Understanding slowly settled over his features as the pieces finally fell into place.
His eyes became complicated, and when he spoke, there was a mixture of helplessness and pain in his voice. “So you deliberately made everything unbearably salty, knowing I’d drink more water, and used that opportunity to get the antidote into me?”
I simply nodded. He stared at me in frustration. His lips parted as though he had a dozen things he wanted to say, but none of them came out. Instead, he released a deep, defeated breath. His fingers moved to his temples as he massaged them, exhaustion creeping into his voice. “Lianne, you really know how to…”
“Did I make the wrong choice?” I asked quietly.
“You…” He stopped himself, staring at me as whatever he wanted to say became impossible to voice. After a moment, he shook his head helplessly. “What am I ever going to do with you? Do you have any idea what you’ve put me through? I would rather endure every bit of suffering myself than watch you hurt.”
I reached for his hand and threaded my fingers through his, meeting his eyes with complete sincerity. “Ethan, I know. I know what you’ve done for me. But have you ever considered how unfair it is for you to carry everything alone? You’ve already sacrificed so much. You deliberately got close to Melisa because of me, tolerated everything she put you through, and accepted all the danger and consequences by yourself. I can’t keep standing behind you while she manipulates you and the poison continues hurting you because you’re trying to shield me. I need to stand beside you. Do you understand?”
He remained quiet, his expression revealing a storm of emotions he couldn’t hide.
I squeezed his hand and continued, “The old me would have been reckless. But I’m not that person anymore. I have the children, Tracy, and most importantly, I have you. I have someone willing to risk everything to keep me safe. I won’t throw my life away anymore. Ethan, you need to believe in me.”
