Chapter 123:
Dressed in a clean, well-fitted tracksuit, he stood there with an easy smile that showed off his bright, even teeth.
Gavin had made his interest clear before, sending me flowers and asking me out more than once, but I had always turned him down with polite distance.
“This seat’s free. Go ahead,” I replied, slipping off my headphones as I gave him a small nod.
Passengers were nearly settled, and the driver was just about to start the bus when a sudden noise erupted near the entrance.

“Alpha? Why are you here?”
Lianne’s POV
My heart jolted, and I instinctively turned toward the bus door.
Ethan was getting on the bus with a plain travel bag in hand.
He was wearing a black hoodie and casual clothes. It took the edge off his usual sharpness, yet somehow made him even more intimidatingly attractive.
I had thought he would drive his flashy luxury car by himself, so seeing him lower himself to ride the bus with us caught me off guard.
The moment he stepped on, his eyes swept across the bus, sharp and probing, before shifting in my direction, or more accurately, to Gavin sitting next to me.
As he walked past me, he shot me a meaningful look, something dark stirring in his eyes that made a chill run down my spine.
He kept going to the back and sat behind me.
“I didn’t think the Alpha would come unwind with us. I figured he’d head straight to the presidential suite and wait there for us,” Gavin said under his breath beside me.
I said nothing. I put my earphones back in, rested my head against the window, and closed my eyes.
But even with my eyes shut, I could still feel that searing stare from behind me, impossible to ignore.
It was the oppressive aura of a top Alpha. Even without doing anything, his intense possessiveness came through the mate bond and closed around my throat so tightly I could hardly breathe.
As soon as the bus started moving, the atmosphere turned lively. People began playing word games, and laughter filled the bus without stopping.
In the middle of the noise, Gavin suddenly leaned in and asked in a low voice, “Lianne, I’ve been wanting to ask, are you seeing someone right now? Or are you single?”
At that moment, a sudden coldness spread from behind me.
I knew Ethan had heard.
I hesitated for a second, then nodded faintly. “I am.”
I had a husband and he was sitting right behind me, but I couldn’t say that.
“I don’t believe you.” Gavin stared at me, his expression serious. “If you really have a boyfriend, then why are you always leaving work alone so late at night? Why do you never talk about him?”
He paused and lowered his voice, his tone turning gentler with concern. “I don’t believe the rumors around the company, about you being the Alpha’s mistress. You’re not that kind of person, Lianne. I want to be with you. Will you give me a chance?”
