Chapter 788:
“I’ve told you this more times than I can count.” He cut me off, his expression utterly serious. “In this lifetime, I’ve chosen you. Sometimes I even wonder if we were bound together in a previous life. Maybe that’s why the Moon Goddess keeps punishing us, forcing our fates to stay intertwined, lifetime after lifetime.”
He raised his hand, his rough fingertip lifting my chin until I had no choice but to meet his eyes, his intense gaze seeming to see straight through me.
“Stop avoiding my question, Lianne. Be honest with me. Do you still love me?”
Lianne’s POV
For a moment, it felt as though time had stopped.

I looked into the uncertainty and hope in Ethan’s eyes. He had endured countless scars for my sake, but even then, he had never been willing to leave me. In that instant, every wall I had built around my heart came crashing down.
I closed my eyes as tears slipped down my cheeks, then whispered, “I love you… Ethan, I love you.”
The moment I said those words, I felt the hand holding my chin tremble intensely.
When I opened my eyes, I saw that Ethan, a man who had always carried unshakable pride, now had tears welling in his reddened eyes. They hovered on the edge of falling, but he stubbornly held them back.
“But I might still let you down in the future,” I admitted. “My illness… my hatred could take over me again at any moment.”
“That’s all right,” he replied, drawing me into his arms, his voice rough yet content. “As long as you’re with me, I don’t care if you let me down a hundred times every day. I’ll treasure every moment with you.”
Eventually, I gave in to his determination and agreed to let him stay in the room and sleep beside me.
However, the moment we lay down, the warmth between us quickly grew more intense.
His uninjured left hand began to move, sliding down my waist. The heat of his touch seeped through the thin fabric of my nightgown, sending a tremor through me.
“Ethan!” I caught his hand. My face burned as I warned him, “Your injuries aren’t healed yet. The doctor said you can’t do anything strenuous!”
He stopped at once, burying his face in the curve of my neck and drawing in a deep breath. His voice came muffled against my skin, rough with restraint. “I know… I just want to hold you a little closer.”
With a helpless sigh, he pulled his hand away, seemingly willing to compromise. Even so, he stayed pressed firmly against my back. “I’ll keep myself under control. Once you’re asleep, I’ll take a cold shower.”
When the first light of morning filtered through the gap in the curtains, I could hear the calm, even rhythm of breathing beside me.
I opened my eyes and found Ethan sitting against the headboard, one hand scrolling through his emails on a tablet.
His gold-rimmed glasses concealed the weariness in his eyes and gave him a scholarly appearance.
“Good morning, honey,” he said, noticing me stir. He set the tablet aside and leaned toward me, his fingertips brushing my forehead before slowly moving down to my cheek. “What would you like to eat? I’ll have someone bring it up.”
