Chapter 143:
The footsteps outside were closing in, and the rogue wolves’ jeering voices were already at my ears. “Sweetheart, where are you hiding? Come out, and we’ll be gentle.”
I curled up in a dark, damp corner with my arms wrapped tightly around my knees. I shut my eyes in despair and prayed for the Moon Goddess to protect me.
But it seemed even the Moon Goddess had left me behind.
Just as a coarse hand was about to pull away the crate, a sharp voice suddenly rang out. “Stop! Pack patrol on duty. Who’s making trouble over there?”
It was the patrol guards.

When they saw things were turning against them, the rogue wolves muttered curses and vanished into the night.
A uniformed Gamma warrior came over and helped me out from behind the pile of debris.
He took in my tangled hair and bloodless face, and a hint of pity flickered in his eyes. “Are you okay? Do you need me to get in touch with your family?”
Family?
I lifted my eyes toward the far-off night sky and gave a sorrowful shake of my head. When I spoke, my voice was rough and so faint it was almost impossible to hear. “I have no family.”
The guy went still for a moment, then breathed out a sigh. In the end, he led me to somewhere safe before turning to leave.
I stood there watching them disappear, while a hollow feeling slowly spread through me.
If Anna had still been by my side, I would have stood with them, bold and unafraid. But as I was now, I could not even keep myself from harm.
By the time I made it home, it was already three in the morning.
When the maid saw the dirt all over me and the obvious scrapes on my hands and legs, she cried out in alarm. “What happened to you, ma’am?”
“I slipped and fell by accident,” I answered tonelessly, brushed aside her attempt to help, and went upstairs by myself.
I showered and changed into a clean set of pajamas. The warm water stung my wounds, but I felt nothing.
The following morning, I automatically reached toward the spot beside me.
It was cold, with no sign anyone had touched it.
Ethan had stayed out the entire night.
At breakfast, I opened social media as I usually did.
Ava had made a post, attaching a picture of a tall man standing beside Ivy’s hospital bed. The morning light washed over his back, making him seem patient and intent.
The caption read, “Nothing beats this kind of companionship. Please don’t interrupt them.”
I was so numb I felt nothing at all.
I set my phone aside and called my assistant.
“Change the Nitesland business trip to this afternoon,” I said in an even tone. “Pack everything for me. I’ll go straight from the office.”
I just wanted to wrap up this final assignment, then disappear for good.
I wanted to leave Ethan behind, leave that stifling mate bond behind, and leave behind every painful part of the past.
