Chapter 814:
Her smile faltered. She avoided my eyes before replying quietly, “No… nothing like that. Jeremy only mentioned that Ethan’s temper has been terrible lately. He’s even been short with people he’s doing business with. Don’t let your imagination run wild.”
“I can’t shake the feeling that something’s bothering him. Every time he avoids my question, I get even more anxious.” I stared down at my lap, absentmindedly smoothing the edge of my clothes.
Tracy offered me a comforting smile. “That’s what happens when you love someone with your whole heart. You never used to care who he disagreed with. Now every little thing involving him affects you. You’ve probably overanalyzed it until it seems much bigger than it really is.”
I quietly accepted her reasoning and was just beginning to relax when my phone suddenly buzzed inside my bag.
The caller ID stole the air from my lungs. Melisa was calling.
Lianne’s POV
Not wanting to disturb the baby, who had finally drifted off, I shared a silent look with Tracy before slipping away on quiet feet. I walked all the way to the far end of the hospital hallway before answering the call.

“Lianne, I’m really sorry. I never got back to your messages because I’ve been buried in work, and I didn’t even have my phone with me. I hope I didn’t trouble you.” Melisa sounded drained, though her voice remained calm and courteous.
The small resentment I’d been carrying disappeared the instant I heard her explanation.
She was doing her best to help me recover. Thinking the worst of her over something so minor suddenly felt childish.
“It’s okay. Take care of yourself first,” I said gently.
“The reason I called is that I haven’t been able to get hold of Ethan. I hope I’m not bothering you, but there are a few investment papers involving my family that need his signature as soon as possible. Could you let him know?”
“Absolutely. I’ll tell him right away.” Feeling unexpectedly guilty toward her, I agreed without hesitation.
Once the call ended, I immediately texted Ethan, telling him what had happened.
Barely a few seconds had passed before he called. “Lianne, I told you not to answer her calls.”
His harsh voice crashed through the speaker with such force it made my ears ring.
The weight behind those words left me rooted where I stood.
“I… I only answered because she’s still handling my treatment. She said she couldn’t reach you, and she kept saying it was important…” My fingers tightened around the phone as panic and hurt tangled inside me. My voice began quivering before I even noticed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I wasn’t supposed to answer…”
Ethan drew a slow breath, clearly forcing himself to stay under control, but his voice stayed firm. “Lianne, hear me out. From now on, block her number. Whatever she tells you, don’t trust any of it.”
His extreme reaction ripped apart the fragile sense of peace I had only recently begun to recover.
Every uneasy feeling I’d pushed aside came flooding back at once.
Why was Ethan reacting like this? What truth was he trying so desperately to keep hidden from me?
