Chapter 851

Chapter 851:
She fixed me with a look of self-righteous certainty. “Lianne, I don’t carry the weight of your history with the Thorn Pack. I’m far more qualified to stand beside him than you are. You don’t deserve him.”
I didn’t deserve Ethan?
The claim was so absurd that I almost laughed out loud.
“What you’ve fallen for isn’t Ethan,” I said calmly. “It’s the way he loves me. But that kind of devotion was never meant for you, and it never will be.”
“I know,” Melisa admitted without the slightest hesitation. Even so, a stubborn determination lingered in her eyes. “But I still want to give myself a chance. Just this once, I want to compete with you.”
Before I could respond, the door opened. Ethan walked in with a cup of warm milk in his hand.
His eyes moved between Melisa and me, immediately sensing that something wasn’t quite right. A slight frown settled on his face.
“What’s wrong?” he asked as he came over to my side. He handed me the warm milk before naturally slipping an arm around my shoulders in a protective embrace. “What were you two talking about?”
Although his tone remained steady, I caught the hint of concern hidden beneath it.
I accepted the cup and took a small sip. The warm milk slid gently down my throat, driving away some of the lingering chill in my chest.

Looking up at him, I smiled reassuringly. “Nothing important. I just felt a little dizzy after having my blood drawn.”
Ethan gently tightened his arm around my shoulders. “Once the examination is over, I’ll take you straight home so you can get some rest.”
His instinctive protectiveness made my heart soften. Across the room, Melisa quietly watched the interaction, and something complicated flickered across her eyes.
The emotion vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. She lowered her head, calmly recording the test results as though the conversation we’d just had—and the silent challenge she’d thrown down—had never happened.
But I knew better. From this day forward, the relationship between Melisa and me would never again be as simple as doctor and patient.
As I watched her busy herself with the medical records, I couldn’t help remembering the Melisa who had once sincerely treated me as a friend.
That warm, genuine side of her seemed to have vanished forever.
Lianne’s POV:
As soon as the checkup was over and we stepped outside, Ethan immediately reached for my hand.
His grip was firm, as though he was afraid I’d slip away the moment he let go.
His anxious eyes searched my face before he asked, “Why do you look so pale? Did Melisa say something to you?”
Instead of answering his questions, I gently withdrew my hand and said softly, “Let’s get in the car first.”
After we got into the car, Ethan started the engine but made no move to drive away. He simply turned toward me, his expression unusually serious. “Lianne, tell me.”
I remained silent for a few seconds before finally speaking. “Melisa told me… she may have developed feelings for you.”
The moment those words left my mouth, Ethan’s expression darkened.
