Chapter 540

Chapter 540:
Tracy and I took the back seat, leaving the kids to claim the rows ahead of us.
Outside, the city slid by, but my mind stayed in a complete muddle.
Tracy was clearly still fuming at Jeremy. She stared stubbornly out the window for the whole ride and wouldn’t so much as look at him, though he kept shooting her nervous looks in the rearview mirror.
It was Ruby who finally broke the silence.
Reaching forward, she poked Ethan’s shoulder with her tiny finger.
“Daddy,” she said, her sweet little voice filling the car. “Forget the five dollars. Can you buy me some candy instead? The ones with the shiny wrappers.”
The change in Ethan was immediate. His usually stern expression softened at once. “Of course. You can have as much as you want.”
Jeremy chuckled from behind the wheel. “Ethan, you’ve got this dad thing way too easy. Ruby, if you ask nicely enough, he’ll probably buy you every candy store in the city.”
“No.” Tracy’s response came so quickly it startled everyone. Her expression was serious and protective. “Ruby’s teeth are already bad. Have you forgotten the last time she went to the dentist? She cried so hard she could barely speak afterward. She’s not getting that much candy.”

I couldn’t help laughing. The disappointed look on Ruby’s face was almost too pitiful to bear. “Alright,” I said, finally relenting. “Just this once. A little candy, and that’s it.”
Ruby instantly brightened. Then she seemed to remember something and added, “Can we get some for Silas too?”
Silas barely glanced away from the window. His answer was calm and practical, nothing like a typical four-year-old. “I don’t want candy. Too much sugar affects concentration.”
Then he turned toward Ethan, his expression remarkably serious. “If you’re buying gifts, I’d rather have a computer with the newest specifications. I want to keep studying programming.”
Ethan blinked in surprise before pride flashed openly across his face. “Done. I’ll have one delivered tomorrow.”
His gaze lingered on both children, filled with unmistakable affection. “Whatever either of you wants, I’ll get it for you.”
“Ethan,” I said helplessly, “you’re going to spoil them.”
He met my eyes in the rearview mirror, his gaze unwavering. “My children deserve the best.”
A dramatic sigh came from the front seat. “Must be nice,” Jeremy lamented. “Having both a son and a daughter. Poor me, the one I like doesn’t want me.”
As he spoke, he deliberately looked at Tracy through the mirror.
She ignored him completely and focused on fixing Ruby’s slightly messy braids.
By the time we arrived at the restaurant, darkness had settled across the city.
The moment we got out of the car, Tracy volunteered to take the children to wash up and practically dragged Jeremy into the private dining room with her.
I had barely stepped away from the car when my phone vibrated in my bag.
It was a message from Frank.
