Chapter 51:
“Tell me when you’re ready to go,” he answered coolly, his eyes never leaving the items being presented onstage, as though I were nothing more than company he could dispense with at any time.
I left the auction hall in quick strides, the chill of the night wind brushing over my face, yet failing to calm the storm raging inside me.
I made my way to a bench beside the outdoor pool and sank onto it, my eyes fixed emptily on the rippling water.
“Well, if it isn’t Lianne. Hiding out here by yourself to have a good cry?”

A shrill, cutting voice split the stillness.
Sylvia showed up like something foul that refused to go away.
She came toward me on clicking heels, her face drenched in scorn. “Did they throw you out? I told you already—you’re nothing without your wolf. Do you really think someone like you still belongs beside the Alpha?”
I had no energy to waste on her, and I rose to leave.
“Don’t move!” Sylvia stepped in front of me, her eyes dripping venom. “Lianne, stop acting so superior. You’ve been hogging the Alpha all to yourself. Have you no shame at all?”
“Shut your mouth and leave.” I looked at her with cold exhaustion, every word edged with weariness.
“I’m not leaving! Stay the hell away from him, bitch!” She became even more hysterical and suddenly lunged forward, shoving me with all her strength.
I was already lightheaded from low blood sugar, and with the tiles slick beneath my feet, I didn’t even get the chance to steady myself.
The freezing pool water swallowed me whole from every direction.
I couldn’t swim.
And with my wolf already gone, my body had become far weaker than it used to be.
Freezing water poured into my nose and down my throat, and I was struck at once by a violent, suffocating choke.
“Help… help…”
I beat at the water in desperation, reaching wildly for anything I could hold, but my fingers met nothing except the empty flow.
I saw Sylvia cast a quick look around before turning and rushing off.
Keeping myself above the surface became harder with every passing second, my soaked clothes dragging me farther down.
My consciousness began to blur, and the broken moonlight above me seemed to drift farther and farther away.
Ethan… Where was he? Was he with Ivy right now, holding her close and bidding on the things she wanted while applause rose all around them?
Despair crept through my mind bit by bit, until it filled every corner.
My lungs burned with a savage pain as my limbs began to twitch and the last shred of strength drained out of me.
If I died here like this, would the suffering finally end?
Slowly, I let my eyes fall shut and surrendered myself to the dark.
Ethan’s POV:
Inside the banquet hall, Ivy hung onto my arm like some tame little kitten.
I took the praise people tossed at me, but something wild and unsettled kept twisting hard inside my chest.
Then, out of nowhere, a savage cry tore through the deepest part of my mind.
