Chapter 791:
Ethan came out of the kitchen with a plate of freshly washed fruit in his hands. His expression was unusually tender as he gently reminded them, “Ruby, Silas, your mom is tired. Don’t make too much noise. Let her rest for a while.”
I sat down on the couch and picked up an apple along with a small silver fruit knife.
The moment my eyes fell on the sharp blade, everything around me seemed to fade.
The cold reflection of the knife held a strange, disturbing appeal, drawing all my attention toward it.
As though something invisible were controlling me, I slowly reached out and ran my fingertip along the edge.
A sharp pain immediately pierced my skin, and tiny beads of blood welled up.
I didn’t move my hand away. Instead, I fixed my gaze on the blood, and an inexplicable feeling of relief spread through me.

That pure, physical pain was more powerful than any amount of alcohol. It was sharper and more real than anything else in my numb existence. It was the only sensation that could still make me feel alive.
“Lianne!” A deep, enraged cry suddenly broke the silence.
Ethan rushed over and immediately tore the knife from my grasp.
His fingers clamped tightly around my wrist. His breathing was shaky, his eyes filled with fear and disbelief. “What were you doing?”
I came back to my senses and looked at his tense jaw. In a low voice, I apologized, “I’m sorry… I couldn’t control that thought.”
He didn’t reprimand me. It was as though all the strength had suddenly left him. He wrapped his arms around me, pulled me tightly against his chest, and rested his chin on my shoulder. His voice shook as he spoke. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have let you get close to something like that… I should have been more careful.”
With my head on his chest, I listened to his pounding heartbeat. My emotions turned so chaotic I couldn’t make sense of any of it.
I felt like a broken doll, and Ethan was desperately trying to put me back together piece by piece, even though I didn’t know how much longer I could keep myself from falling apart.
Ethan’s POV
It was late at night when Lianne took the sedatives the doctor had prescribed and slowly fell into a deep sleep.
I stayed beside her bed for a long time, watching carefully to make sure her breathing stayed steady and that no nightmares disturbed her rest. Only once I was certain she was resting peacefully did I finally leave the room.
As I quietly closed the door, I noticed Silas standing at the far end of the hallway.
He held a pillow tightly against his body, his eyes carrying a level of concern no child his age should have had. “Daddy, is Mommy still sick? It feels like… even though she’s home, her heart is still so far away from us.”
My heart tightened. I walked over and ruffled his hair, forcing a reassuring smile. “Yeah, she’s sick. She’s going through a lot right now, but she’ll get better with time. As long as we stay with her, she’ll slowly recover. You have to trust me, okay?”
