Chapter 126:
Her usual defiant gaze had gone soft, clouded with a smoky haze of longing, while a deep flush spread across her cheeks so beautifully it stole the air from my lungs.
The moment I eased that fierce, consuming advance, she gave a faint little whimper, soft as a kitten’s cry.
That sound pulled hard at something deep inside me, and Arthur, my wolf, let out a triumphant howl.
I lifted her onto my lap, settling her astride my waist.
The water churned wildly, and the searing shock of our skin meeting was almost too much to endure. I could feel every shudder that ran through her.
I dipped my head again, chasing that irresistible softness once more, hungry to go further.
“No, we can’t…” Lianne seemed to recover a sliver of sense all at once, her wet hand pressing feebly against my chest.
I frowned, the desire I had kept buried for two long months flaring hotter than ever.
My patience had been worn razor-thin over those endless months.

“Lianne, don’t push me away.” I clasped the back of her head, my voice low and dangerous, heavy with unmistakable possessiveness.
Just as I was about to disregard her resistance and go on, a sharp knock at the door ripped the moment apart.
“Alpha, your dinner has arrived.”
I swore under my breath, my desire cut off so abruptly it left me seething.
I looked down at Lianne, who was plainly relieved in my arms, and a vein pulsed hard at my temple.
I had no choice but to let her go. Snatching up a robe to cover myself, I strode to the door with a dark, stormy expression.
Dinner had been set beside the pool.
Lianne appeared to have slipped right back into her usual cool distance, eating at an unhurried pace while still half-submerged in the water.
Through the curling steam, her profile looked strikingly calm, as though the trembling woman I had held only moments earlier had been a mere illusion.
The instant she finished her last bite, she rose to her feet and wrapped herself neatly in a towel.
“I’m tired. I’m going to rest.”
She did not spare me a single glance, crossing the wooden floor barefoot and leaving a line of wet footprints behind her.
I remained by the pool, watching her retreat without hesitation, a crushing wave of frustration filling my chest.
After putting things in order for a moment, I went back into the living room and noticed a phone lodged deep between the couch cushions. It was Lianne’s.
I picked it up, and the screen lit beneath my touch.
I knew her passcode, and almost without thinking, I keyed it in. The screen unlocked, her social media feed glowing before me.
I meant to switch it off at once, but my finger slipped and swiped downward, and I went completely still.
Ethan’s POV
I saw a post Ivy had put up the night before last.
“Thanks for staying with me.”
Attached to it was a dimly lit photo with a brooding atmosphere, showing one man’s hand and one woman’s hand locked tightly together. The man’s hand was mine.
