Chapter 243:
Under the faint streetlight, his face came into view.
He looked just as striking and imposing, but he wasn’t Ethan.
I stayed rooted in place, and the shame hit me all over again.
I had taken a stranger for Ethan and stained him with blood in the middle of the street.
“I’m sorry.” Panic rushed through me as I pulled away. I lowered my head and couldn’t look at him. “I got the wrong person. I’m really sorry. I’ll cover the cleaning. I’ll just go…”
I turned and forced myself forward, even as pain shot through my leg. I only wanted to get away.
“Lianne.” His voice came from behind me.
I stiffened, then turned back. He stood between light and shadow, his gaze fixed on me, deep and unreadable.
“You know me?” I asked.
Ethan’s POV
Watching Lianne stagger away, looking so fragile and adrift, ripped me open from the inside, leaving my chest locked tight and my breathing uneven.

“Dammit, go after her! Bring her back!” Arthur roared in my mind, wishing I could rush to her side, wipe away her tears, and comfort her.
But I did not move.
The thought of that report, and the sharp burn of what might have been her betrayal, held me there like iron chains. I drove my nails into my palms until pain bit deep.
“Ethan…” Nancy came nearer, her perfume thick and cloying, turning my stomach with disgust.
She caught her lower lip between her teeth, bold and deliberate, asking for a kiss as if she expected an audience to witness it. “Everyone is watching. Aren’t you going to kiss me? Just to make up for everything I went through…”
I turned toward her with a cold stare, cutting through the noise around us like a knife.
“Stay away from me.” Every word landed with a deadly chill, as though it had risen from some frozen abyss. “Nancy, remember this, I already have a mate. Push your luck again, and I swear, you will not walk out of this room whole.”
Her face shifted, pain flickering across it, but it stirred absolutely nothing in me. There was only the constant scrape of annoyance under my skin.
I pushed through the crowd and walked out without a second glance.
Inside the car, silence swallowed everything.
A sharp stab tore through my stomach so suddenly it stole the air from my lungs, and cold sweat spread across my forehead.
With shaking hands, I fumbled out a bottle of pills and threw several into my mouth before forcing them down with the bitter taste in my throat.
From the back seat, I pulled out a wrinkled medical report. Beneath the weak glow of the reading light, my gaze fixed on the condemning date.
It lined up exactly with the period of Lianne’s pregnancy.
