Chapter 642:
After what felt like forever, he asked softly, “Do you miss the kids?”
My heart ached, and I answered immediately, “I do.”
“I’ll video call you in twenty minutes.”
As soon as he said this, he hung up.
The screen went dark. In that moment, my thoughts were anything but calm.
I felt strangely nervous and excited, my eyes kept drifting toward the clock on the wall.
Normally, twenty minutes would pass in the blink of an eye. This time, every second felt painfully slow.
I wandered around the room restlessly. First I felt thirsty and drank three glasses of water. Then I traded my loungewear for a proper shirt.
I went into the bathroom, washed my face, combed my hair, and checked myself in the mirror over and over, trying my best to hide the exhaustion that had built up on my face over the past few days.
Waiting made me so anxious.
Only twelve minutes had passed when my phone suddenly lit up. Ethan was calling on video.

I took a deep breath, then quickly picked up the call. The screen flickered, and his handsome face immediately came into view.
He appeared to be sitting inside a car. The scenery outside the window moved past steadily as he spoke.
“I’m almost home. Wait a little longer.” His tone was as calm as ever.
I stared at him in surprise. He had actually called ahead just to let me know.
Was he worried I would grow impatient while waiting?
It had been a long time since I had looked at him this closely.
His well-defined jawline was just as sharp as I remembered. There was a trace of fatigue in his eyes, but it did nothing to soften his usual commanding presence.
Even through the screen, one brief exchange of glances left my heart racing.
I thought he would end the call after those few words, but he didn’t.
I carefully set my phone on its stand and kept my eyes fixed on the screen. No matter how hard I tried to suppress it, a small hope deep inside my heart began to grow.
Shortly afterward, I heard a door open somewhere in the background.
Ruby’s and Silas’s cheerful laughter came through the line immediately.
“It’s Mommy on the call,” Ethan announced. There was a subtle warmth in his voice.
He set the phone on the table, adjusted the camera, and stepped out of view, leaving the screen entirely to the children and me.
“Mommy! Mommy! I missed you so much!” Ruby’s little face suddenly filled the screen, her bright eyes sparkling with excitement.
My heart softened instantly. Tears blurred my vision as I answered in a trembling voice, “I missed you too, Ruby. I think about you every single day.”
Ruby tilted her head, her clever little mind already at work. “Did you miss Silas? And… did you miss Daddy too?”
My heart skipped a beat. Instinctively, my eyes darted to the edge of the frame.
I knew Ethan was still there.
