Chapter 836:
I logged into my work account and noticed Ethan’s profile in the corner was offline. That only reinforced my assumption that he was still caught up dealing with those troublesome family affairs and probably didn’t have a free moment to spare.
Just as I became completely absorbed in reviewing a stack of overseas supply chain documents, the quiet click of the front door lock echoed through the house. The sudden sound shattered the silence of the late night, making my heart jump.
“Who’s there?” I called instinctively, getting to my feet as I fixed a cautious stare on the door.
“It’s me.” Ethan’s familiar deep voice rang out, though exhaustion lingered beneath every word.
Relief washed over me at once. I hurried over, unable to hide my surprise. “You’re home already. I thought you’d be stuck at the hospital until late tonight.”
As he slipped off his suit jacket, I naturally reached over to take it from him. I was about to ask how Rola was doing when I noticed the heavy weariness on his face and the dark shadow lingering between his brows.
He didn’t answer right away. He simply stood there in the entryway, motionless, as though an invisible layer of frost had settled around him.
“Ethan?” I asked gently. “Did something happen?”
Only then did he seem to snap back to himself. Rubbing his temples, he forced a stiff smile. “It’s nothing. I’m just tired.” His gaze shifted toward my laptop. “You, on the other hand… work’s been over for hours, and you’re still at it. Come on—this is our home, not the office.”
Although he was clearly trying to joke, there wasn’t much warmth left in his eyes.

I laughed softly, walked behind him, and wrapped my arms around his waist, resting my cheek against his broad back. I only wanted to chase away the coldness clinging to him with a little warmth of my own.
But the moment my face brushed against the back of his shirt, I caught a faint whiff of unfamiliar perfume.
It was a sharp, cool floral fragrance. One I had never worn.
My mind went completely blank. A surge of panic crashed through me so suddenly that I almost couldn’t breathe.
It felt like one of those ridiculous scenes straight out of a television drama—except now it was happening to me.
Frozen in place, I leaned in almost imperceptibly, hoping I’d been mistaken.
I hadn’t. The scent was still there.
It was incredibly faint, nearly buried beneath Ethan’s familiar woody cologne. But werewolves possessed an exceptionally keen sense of smell. No matter how subtle it was, I couldn’t mistake it.
“Ethan’s been with another woman!” Anna cried out in alarm.
The insecurity buried deep inside me rose all at once, tightening around my heart like invisible hands.
For one terrifying moment, my thoughts flashed to Melisa. And to every stretch of time when I hadn’t been by Ethan’s side.
I forced myself to stay calm.
Ethan was both the Alpha of the Thorn Pack and the head of the Voss Group. He crossed paths with countless people every day—between meetings and social obligations, so it was only natural that he’d pick up traces of someone else’s scent.
