Chapter 29:
She had looked as though she wanted to speak, but held back. A sharp irritation twisted in my gut, and a cold unease spread in my chest.
I took a step forward, my voice colder now. “And then? What else aren’t you telling me?”
The maid, clearly intimidated, paled, her body trembling slightly. “He stayed in the living room for quite a while. When he left, I heard him tell your wife to leave with him. He said this place wasn’t worth staying in anymore.”
I slammed the glass down onto the counter. He actually asked Lianne to leave with him?
My hands clenched, and I fought the rising, violent urge inside me.
At that moment, everything became clear.
The man trying to take my mate from me was the one Lianne had spoken of—the one she had loved for years.
“What’s his background?” I asked, my gaze steely as I focused on the pile of gifts.

The maid hesitated, almost whispering, “His name’s Frank Mill. He’s some kind of celebrity, tall and handsome. And… he seemed to be an Alpha too.”
The moment she saw the grimness on my face, she didn’t dare say another word, quickly hurrying out with her head lowered.
I stood there, my chest heaving.
An Alpha. A public figure. Trying to take my wife right from under my nose.
I turned and made my way upstairs.
The silence in the hallway was oppressive, the sound of my own heavy breathing the only thing breaking the stillness.
Inside, I felt like a storm was raging—rage at the intrusion of my space, fear of losing what I held dear, everything colliding in a suffocating mess.
I pushed open the door to the master bedroom.
The room was barely lit, the curtains drawn tight, casting shadows across everything.
Lianne was in the center of the bed, her body still, her hair fanned out around her on the pillow. She looked serene, her face soft, untouched by the world.
I settled beside her, my gaze fixed on her.
She seemed so untouched in sleep, so innocent.
The faint scent she carried, something that felt like it belonged to me, wrapped around me. It was a pull I couldn’t escape, drawing me closer.
By all rights, I should be staying with her.
She was my fated mate, the one who had stood by me when I was disabled.
But Ivy had come back.
I couldn’t shake the memory of the emails Ivy had sent me during her time abroad, how she had ventured into freezing regions alone to find a cure for my legs. I remembered how she had been stranded overseas when unrest broke out, falling into deep depression because of it.
She had suffered because of me.
I owed her more than I had ever acknowledged. I couldn’t just leave her. I had to make room for her in my life, to give her the place she deserved.
I closed my eyes, forcing myself to stiffen my resolve.
Just then, I noticed Lianne seemed to be having a nightmare.
