Chapter 435:
I sat in the chair across from her, holding a cup of black coffee. My eyes remained fixed on her the entire time.
“Lianne,” I called softly, breaking the oppressive silence hanging over the dining room.
Her hand stopped moving for a split second, though she still refused to meet my gaze.
“Not long ago, I had a business trip to Brinewick and came across someone interesting,” I said casually, carefully watching every change in her expression. “Outside a convenience store, I met a little girl who absolutely loved candy. She was beautiful and had gorgeous eyes. They looked exactly like yours.”

Just as I reached for my glass of milk, my hand froze at Ethan’s words.
The milk trembled inside the glass, nearly sloshing over the rim.
Every muscle in my body tensed instantly, and a wave of cold swept through me.
Why was Ethan suddenly talking about Brinewick?
Why bring up that little girl?
Was it really just a coincidence? Or had he found out something and was deliberately testing my reaction?
I forced myself to remain calm and slowly placed the glass back on the table. My fingernails dug deeply into my palms, the sharp pain helping me keep my composure.
“Oh, that’s quite a coincidence,” I said with a strained smile. Even to my own ears, my voice sounded unnatural.
But Ethan didn’t intend to stop there.
“That little girl looked so much like you.”
He spoke slowly, every word measured. “Honestly, I’ve never been particularly fond of children. I’ve never had much patience for them. But the moment I saw her, I couldn’t help liking her. It felt strange, like there was something familiar about her.”
My heart pounded hard against my chest.
The food in front of me instantly lost all appeal. A wave of nausea rose in me, leaving me uncomfortable and restless.
Drawing in a deep breath, I set down my knife and fork and looked at him with a frosty expression. “If you have something to say, then say it. Stop talking in circles.”
Ethan suddenly chuckled. The unsettling obsession that had lingered in his eyes moments ago disappeared, replaced by a calm and composed expression.
“Don’t be so tense,” he said casually, leaning back in his seat. “I’m just making small talk.”
He adjusted his posture and adopted the tone of someone discussing business. “When we get back to the company later, I want you to prepare a comprehensive evaluation report for the next stage of the Brinewick project. Talking about that little girl just reminded me of my trip there.”
His relaxed demeanor did nothing to ease my anxiety. If anything, it made me even more uneasy.
Just as I started to believe I had made it through his probing questions and quietly let out a sigh of relief, Ethan casually dropped another bombshell.
