Chapter 550:
He let out a helpless sigh, then covered his little sister’s curious eyes with one hand and led her toward the door. “Ruby, let’s go downstairs for some pudding. Don’t bother them.”
The door quietly clicked shut behind them.
I looked at the man before me, the one whose world revolved around me, and felt the warmth of his hand. A bittersweet ache spread through my heart.
Ethan and I spent a few peaceful and happy days at the villa.
But one night, I couldn’t sleep. Thoughts of my father’s death lingered heavily in my mind.
At three o’clock in the morning, the villa was completely still.
Beside me, Ethan slept soundly.
Moonlight streamed through the curtains, softening the sharp lines of his profile.
I stared blankly at the ceiling. Over and over, Frank’s words echoed through my mind: “Your father’s death wasn’t an accident.”
The sentence felt like a poisoned thorn lodged deep inside me, causing my heart to ache unbearably.

Carefully, I lifted the blanket and climbed out of bed. My bare feet sank silently into the soft carpet.
The first place I went was the children’s room next door. Ruby was fast asleep, clutching her old stuffed toy tightly in her arms, her tiny mouth hanging slightly open as she breathed softly. Silas, meanwhile, lay perfectly straight on his back. Even in sleep, his posture was as composed as his father’s.
When I confirmed that both children were sleeping peacefully, I felt a slight sense of relief.
My restless thoughts left me completely awake.
Then I headed downstairs to the living room and opened my laptop.
The cold glow from the screen illuminated my face.
I logged into the internal system, planning to sort out a few cross-border trade contracts that Noah had not yet completed.
While Ethan was recovering from his injuries, Noah had taken charge of most of the pack’s business. The dark circles under his eyes were apparent.
“Get some sleep, Noah. I’ll take care of the rest,” I sent him in a message.
Noah immediately responded, “Thanks, Lianne. But don’t stay up too late, or Ethan’s going to chew me out when he finds out.”
After closing the chat window, I was about to start working on the documents when my phone suddenly lit up.
It was a message from Frank.
“I found a lead regarding the surveillance footage that was destroyed on the day your father died. Meet me at the roundabout near your villa. Right now.”
My heart began to beat faster.
Now? At three in the morning?
My first instinct was to refuse and arrange to meet him tomorrow instead.
Before I could respond, however, another message popped up.
“The evidence could disappear again at any moment. I don’t have another option, and neither do you.”
My gaze drifted toward the closed bedroom door upstairs. Cold sweat slowly formed on my palms.
Every rational thought told me not to go. But my need for the truth was so intense that I couldn’t fight off the urge to go.
I quickly put on a long black trench coat over my silk nightgown, then quietly slipped out into the darkness.
