Chapter 30:
Her long lashes fluttered wildly, a thin layer of sweat dotting her forehead. Her lips parted, whispering in distress, “Ethan… don’t go. Don’t leave me…”
Without warning, she reached out, her hand grasping at nothing until she finally found mine.
In that moment, I lost all control.
Our bond, deep and unshakable, flared to life, and the pain in my chest intensified, sharp and unrelenting.
I turned my hand, gripping hers tightly, pulling her cold, small hand into mine.

Leaning down, I stared at her restless face, whispering softly, “Lianne, I’m sorry.”
Lianne’s POV:
I had no idea how long I had been out when my eyes finally fluttered open. The room was washed in the weak glow of a lone wall light.
Ethan was sitting beside the bed, his broad hand clasping mine, his dark stare locked on my face with an expression I couldn’t quite read.
A few days earlier, before I signed that Rejection and finally saw everything for what it was, finding him at my bedside like this would have made my heart leap, would have made me think he truly cared.
But after waiting through these past few days, I had finally accepted the truth.
Him coming back now was probably just his way of ending us tomorrow.
He couldn’t wait to clear me out of the way for his first love.
“You’re awake?” Ethan murmured, weariness threading through his voice.
I didn’t answer right away and simply slipped my hand from his hold.
The moment my fingers grazed his palm, I felt his whole body stiffen.
“Mm-hmm.” My reply came out flat as I pushed myself upright.
At first, I wanted to ask where he had been for the past few days, to ask whether he really meant to break our bond for Ivy.
But before the words could leave my mouth, my eyes locked on the collar of his shirt.
There, against the pale fabric, sat the faint smear of pink lipstick.
Then, right behind it, a familiar perfume drifted to me. It was Ivy’s.
In that second, it felt as though my whole world had flipped over and my mind emptied out.
I had already imagined that he and Ivy might have gotten sexually intimate. But seeing the proof laid out so plainly in front of me made me realize I had given myself far too much credit.
A tight knot rose in my throat, and my eyes stung with tears.
I kept reminding myself that this was Ethan, the man I had loved for years.
“Don’t come near me!” I suddenly snapped, my body jerking back toward the corner of the bed like I was shrinking away from something filthy.
The instant the words left me, nausea crashed over me, and acid burned up my throat.
I didn’t care about anything else and bent over the edge of the bed, vomiting hard onto the floor.
“Lianne!” Ethan’s expression changed at once. He immediately reached out to steady me and grabbed the trash can nearby.
But the closer he came, the stronger Ivy’s perfume became.
