Chapter 678:
Everyone in my department was in high spirits as the weekend began. Laughter filled the air while the mouthwatering scent of barbecue drifted through the cool evening breeze.
Alex paired Zoe with me to help prepare the food. His intent couldn’t have been more obvious — he wanted the conflict between us finally settled.
I had never wanted to waste my energy on something so insignificant. Since Zoe had taken the first step toward making peace, I accepted her goodwill without giving it too much thought.
As the alcohol kept flowing, the party soon reached its peak.
Everyone took turns raising their glasses for a toast. Surrounded by cheerful persuasion, I found it impossible to decline and ended up drinking far more than I intended.
The liquor burned as it slid down my throat, spreading a pleasant warmth through me. Before long, my eyesight turned hazy, and a dull ache began pulsing through my head.
“I’m going to the restroom,” I said, holding the table as I pushed myself up, hoping a splash of cold water would help me sober up.
The villa was filled with winding hallways that connected in every direction. With my mind clouded by alcohol, it didn’t take long before I realized I had no idea where I was.

Just as I was starting to grow irritated, quiet voices drifted from the corner ahead.
It was Zoe and Alex.
I was about to walk over and ask them the way to the restroom when I heard my name. My footsteps stopped on instinct.
“Alex, why are you treating Lianne so well?” Zoe’s voice was slurred from drinking, and every word dripped with disdain. “Ethan already broke his bond with her. Everyone in our circle knows it. An Alpha like him only found her interesting for a while. Once he got bored, he threw her away. If you keep trying to get on her good side, you’d better be careful. You might end up backing the wrong person and making a complete fool of yourself.”
“That’s enough. Let’s not talk about this anymore,” Alex replied in a neutral tone. “No matter what, she’s still our director. We should at least keep things looking pleasant.”
Hidden around the corner, I stood perfectly still. The lingering scent of alcohol seemed to rush straight to my head, but my heart felt colder than ever.
So this was how they saw me. Just another woman Ethan could discard whenever he pleased. Every kind gesture they had shown me had been nothing but a performance.
Pretending I hadn’t heard a word, I quietly turned around and headed back to the terrace.
By then, the alcohol had completely taken over me.
My face felt hot, and everything before my eyes blurred together.
As dinner came to an end, the only thing on my mind was calling a cab and getting away from that stifling place.
