Chapter 56:
I had never once fooled myself into believing his heart held a place for me. And yet, just because he had bent down earlier to fasten my shoe, I had stupidly allowed a sliver of hope to creep in.
Now I understood that the whole thing had been nothing more than a show for his grandparents. And what came after had always been the same merciless truth.
Then my phone rang out of nowhere.
My heart lurched, absurdly wishing it would be Ethan.
Instead, the voice that came through was clipped and emotionless. “Ma’am, concerning what happened to you at the pool tonight, we have the suspect in custody. She’s admitted she was following someone’s orders. Are you able to come in and make a statement?”

“I’m at the hospital. I can’t make it,” I said, shutting my eyes as weariness pressed down on me. “My lawyer will deal with it.”
I reached out to a lawyer from Voss Group’s legal team, one of the capable people Harold had arranged. He was someone I could trust.
By the time the matter was finally taken care of, the soup the housekeeper had delivered had already turned cold. I lifted it for two small sips, but all it left in my mouth was bitterness.
Before drifting off, I looked at my phone one final time.
The screen stayed completely dark.
The man bound to me by fate, the father of the baby growing inside me, had not given me even one word of concern from beginning to end.
I switched off the light and curled into myself on the chilly hospital bed, my hand resting lightly over my still-flat belly.
“Baby, from now on, it’s only you and me.”
With disappointment and sorrow filling my chest, I slowly let my eyes close in the dark.
Lianne’s POV:
The morning light streamed through the hospital corridor’s glass panels, pricking at my eyes.
I looked down at my phone. The display was empty—aside from a few junk messages, there was nothing from Ethan.
A faint, self-derisive smile tugged at my lips as I slipped the phone back into my bag.
What had I been hoping for? Did I really believe that while he held his love in his arms last night, he would somehow feel that his mate was collapsing by the roadside, worn down by exhaustion and heartbreak?
If Frank hadn’t sensed something was off and insisted on taking me to the hospital, I might have disappeared quietly into the dark.
After leaving the hospital, I went straight to the office instead of heading home.
“Lianne, you look awful.” Noah’s gaze was full of concern as he looked at me. “The Alpha came in early. He wants to see you the moment you arrive. He’s in a very bad mood.”
I gave a small nod, drew in a breath, and pushed open the heavy wooden door.
Inside, Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his figure tall and commanding.
At the sound, he turned, his eyes glacial as they fixed on me without blinking.
We faced each other in silence, neither of us speaking.
In that moment, countless words surged through my mind.
