Chapter 552:
“Did I wake you?” I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice calm.
Ethan didn’t question me. He didn’t even show any anger. He just rose from the chair, walked toward me, reached out with his large, warm hands, and wrapped them around my cold hands.
“Why are your hands so cold?” he muttered. The heat from his palms sent a sharp tremor through me.
His silent concern cut deeper than any angry outburst could have.
Unable to endure the heavy silence any longer, I decided to offer him a partial truth. “I went to see Frank. The children left some things at his place, and they needed them urgently, so I asked him to bring them over.”

I took out my phone and showed him a carefully prepared, vaguely worded text message.
Ethan only glanced at the screen, then looked away.
He dropped his gaze, hiding the complicated emotions swirling in them. “I believe you,” he said in a hoarse tone.
But when he said those words, the tension in the air seemed to thicken.
“I just feel like I might lose you,” he said suddenly as he pulled me into his arms. He buried his face in my neck and inhaled deeply, as though trying to capture my scent. “Lianne… even when you’re standing right in front of me, even when I’m holding you like this, I still feel like you could disappear at any moment. You hide things from me. You always leave yourself a way out… Have you ever planned to stay with me for the rest of your life?”
Seeing this side of him left my heart aching. A proud and powerful Alpha, someone who had always stood above others, was showing such helpless insecurity before me.
I couldn’t deny his words. He was right. I had always prepared myself to leave whenever necessary, especially after hearing what Frank had told me.
Trying to ease the unbearable tension, I lifted my head and kissed the corner of his lips.
The kiss instantly set something alight between us. Ethan’s breathing quickened. He held the back of my head and took control of the kiss.
His tongue moved with desperate possessiveness, claiming every corner of my mouth, while his hands moved around my waist.
“Mmm… the children might wake up…” My voice came out unsteady. As I pushed against him, my heart raced.
“They’re fast asleep,” he murmured against my ear, his voice dripping with raw possessiveness. “Don’t push me away, Lianne. Please.”
After holding me close for a while, he slowly loosened his arms. His sharp gaze locked onto mine, seeing through every defense I had built. “Are you investigating something?”
My entire body stiffened. The calm expression I had carefully maintained broke instantly.
