Chapter 755:
During dinner, Tracy happily shared stories from work, from dealing with scheming coworkers to handling demanding clients. She was thoughtful enough to avoid mentioning Ethan even once, keeping her promise not to bring up anything that would upset me.
Late that night, after I’d watched her yawn over and over, Jeremy finally carried her upstairs to bed. Then I picked up my bag and left.
I didn’t go back to my empty apartment. It was so cold that it never felt like home. The silence there would only make the sound of my own heartbeat louder, trapping me in my thoughts until sunrise.
I took a taxi back to the bar I’d visited the night before. I wanted another glass of that smooth red wine, but when I arrived, a large “For Sale” sign hung across the once lively entrance.

I stood quietly on the sidewalk in disappointment, the cool evening breeze sweeping through my hair, leaving it disheveled. That wine from last night had been something special. Under its intoxication, I’d been able to steal a few precious moments dreaming about Ethan.
Resting against the cold wall, I took out my phone to search for another nearby bar. It didn’t matter where I went. As long as I could survive this endless night, anywhere would do.
“Excuse me, miss?” A bright, youthful voice suddenly came from behind me, followed by a gentle tap on my shoulder.
I paused, then turned around. The face was vaguely familiar. It was the young man who had lent me his phone the previous night.
“I’m Harry Thorpe. Do you remember me?” He smiled, revealing two pointed canine teeth. “You were pretty drunk last night. You insisted on borrowing my phone to make a call, then tried to pay me a hundred dollars afterward.”
Embarrassment hit me like a crashing wave. Fragments from the previous night rushed back into my mind, each one piercing my brain like a needle.
My mind went completely blank. I couldn’t believe it, I had actually borrowed a stranger’s phone just to call Ethan, a man who had blocked my number.
“You kept asking him why he hadn’t come,” Harry said, watching me with curiosity. “The man on the other end never said a single word. He stayed silent the whole time. Was he… your ex-boyfriend?”
I felt a pang in my heart.
So Ethan had heard everything. He had quietly listened to my drunken sobs and rambling without saying a single word.
He was never going to talk to me. I could almost picture him holding the phone with an indifferent expression, listening to my pathetic one-sided conversation as if it were nothing but a joke.
At that moment, I felt like an absolute fool. He had done everything he could to leave the past behind. He was living a new life without me. Yet I was still clinging to the broken pieces of what we once had, disturbing him over and over whenever alcohol lowered my defenses.
I drew in a slow breath, forcing down the tightness in my throat, then told him calmly, “He was my former mate.”
