Chapter 576:
His actions lacked all restraint, urgent and restless, driven by emotions he could barely contain.
Gone was the gentle affection he usually showed me. There was no soft kiss against my forehead this time. Instead, he pressed his face against my neck and bit down fiercely, as though he needed proof that I still belonged to him, or perhaps needed somewhere to pour all his silent pain.
“Ethan… you’re hurting me…” I whispered through clenched teeth.
Yet he seemed unable to hear. His grip tightened around my waist with desperate strength, like he wanted to pull me into himself completely.
His uneven breaths brushed against my skin, making my body tremble.

He was terrified, terrified of losing me.
Even someone as strong and untouchable as Ethan could unravel under that fear, breaking apart with the helplessness of a child.
“Promise me something.” He lifted his head abruptly, his reddened eyes fixed intensely on mine. “Lianne, don’t ever leave me. No matter what happens or what you learn, don’t shut me out. Please.”
The desperation in his gaze shattered something inside me.
I wrapped my arms around him and slid my fingers gently through his damp hair.
His body was trembling. I could feel the violent rhythm of his heartbeat against me.
“Ethan, nobody else could ever take your place in my heart. I’ve always belonged to you, and nothing will ever change that,” I whispered honestly.
But I still couldn’t give him the promise he truly wanted.
Because somewhere ahead of us, the truth was waiting.
Wanting to pull him away from that crushing silence between us, I lifted my chin and pressed my lips softly against his cold ones.
“Ethan, I need you,” I murmured, offering him the deepest closeness I could, hoping somehow it would ease the emptiness consuming him from within.
Lianne’s POV
My eyelids drifted shut as my lashes quivered softly, scattering uneven patterns across my cheeks like trembling shadows in candlelight.
I had already prepared myself for Ethan’s anger. Every muscle in me tightened in expectation, and I subtly lifted my body toward him, ready to endure whatever roughness his emotions demanded.
But the storm I anticipated never struck.
Instead, Ethan abruptly pushed away from me, bracing himself with his arms as the heat of his body vanished from above mine.
From where he hovered over me, his gaze locked onto mine. Countless unreadable feelings churned within his eyes, layered too deeply for me to untangle.
“Lianne, I want you, but not like this. I hate that you’re trying to make up for something by giving yourself to me.”
His tone came out restrained and icy, each syllable sounding forced through rigid control.
Without another word, he shoved the blanket aside, climbed out of bed, and disappeared barefoot into the bathroom.
A harsh slam echoed through the room as the door shut behind him.
