Chapter 234:
I had lain in bed so long that my body felt as though it were unraveling. When I tried to rise and take a few steps, he tensed instantly, like a vigilant bodyguard, refusing to let me move.
Later, a nurse brought a wheelchair, suggesting I go downstairs to the garden for some fresh air.
I glanced at my reflection in the mirror, my face still obscured by thick bandages, and shook my head.
I couldn’t bear the thought of anyone seeing me like this.
So every evening, Ethan would close the hospital door behind us, carefully lift me from the bed, and slowly pace the spacious VIP room with me cradled in his arms.
“Does this feel a little less stifling?” he whispered into my ear. The soft thrum of his chest pressed against my back, carrying a fleeting, deceptive comfort.

I leaned into his shoulder, listening to the steady, reassuring rhythm of his heartbeat. For a brief moment, the pain and tension of our past seemed to fade away.
Three days later, the hospital finally released me.
Ethan lingered as I finished breakfast, giving the servants repeated instructions before rushing off to his office.
I settled onto the wide, comfortable bed in the bedroom, propped up by plush pillows, a thick parenting book resting in my hands.
In the past, I had to scavenge for parenting knowledge in secret, always careful to hide it from Ethan. Now, I could study freely, finally learning what it meant to be a mother.
Suddenly, a jarring phone ringtone shattered the quiet of the room. I glanced at the unfamiliar number flashing on the screen and hesitated briefly before pressing the answer button.
“Lianne, you’re not dead yet?”
The voice was sharp, laced with venom. It was Nancy.
Since Ethan had sued her and orchestrated her dismissal, she had vanished entirely from the public eye. I hadn’t imagined she’d still be lurking, silently observing me from the shadows.
“I hear you’re pregnant. Quite the cunning move,” Nancy sneered, her jealousy dripping through the line. “Do you really think having a child will cement your place as Luna? Do you think Ethan treats you well now out of love?”
I turned the page of my book, keeping my tone even, steady. “Nancy, I should actually thank you. If it weren’t for you, Ethan wouldn’t have made his choice between Ivy and me so quickly. In the end, he chose me, and even let me keep the baby.”
Nancy’s fury erupted, her voice shrill and harsh. “Don’t get cocky! Do you think it’s easy to stay in the pack? So much has happened recently. Your presence has shaken the stability of the pack. The Elders have already stepped in. You’re wrapped up in scandal, and you don’t even have a wolf! They’ll never let you remain Luna. Just wait, they’ll kick you out!”
I tightened my grip on the phone, my chest jolting. The Elders had stepped in?
