Chapter 457:
For some reason, a wave of bitterness rose inside me.
I didn’t hate Rola for what she’d said, or Evelyn for how she’d acted. I hated myself for being so weak, so helpless.
In this complicated relationship that had stretched on for years, I had always been the one standing behind Ethan’s protection.
It had been that way three years ago. And even after three years, nothing had changed.
I had sworn I would become stronger. I wanted to take my children and free myself from Ethan’s grasp. Yet every time disaster struck, it was always that proud, powerful man who shielded me, taking every hit meant for me.
“Ethan. I’m sorry…” I whispered.

My fingers dug into the wet earth as I gathered the last traces of strength in my body and slowly crawled back toward the Darkroot Forest. Even if I could only move a little closer, even if I could only feel the faintest trace of him, that would be enough for me.
The night was dark and suffocating.
Suddenly, a streak of white lightning tore across the sky. A violent wind followed, and moments later, heavy rain poured down from above.
Soon, the downpour became relentless.
The freezing rain beat against my injured body, soaking my torn, blood-stained shirt.
The blood that had dried on my clothes dissolved again under the rain and mixed with the mud.
The pain from the silver poison intensified in the freezing downpour. It felt as though my body was being pulled apart by fire and ice at the same time.
I didn’t know how long I stayed there in the rain. My vision grew increasingly blurry.
Then, all at once, the rain above me stopped.
Slowly, I raised my head. A black umbrella hovered over me, shielding me from the rain.
Lianne’s POV:
Frank stood beside me beneath an umbrella, the bottoms of his pants already stained with mud. The man who was always gentle and composed now wore an expression of grief and gravity I had never seen on him before.
“Come home with me, Lianne.” His voice was blurred by the relentless rain, but the sincerity in every word was unmistakable. “Just look at yourself. If you keep this up, you’re going to die out here.”
I slowly shook my head. Rainwater dripped from my soaked hair as I spoke in a hoarse whisper. “I’m not leaving… Ethan still hasn’t come out.”
“What good is staying here going to do?” Frank crouched beside me, trying to help me to my feet, frustration creeping into his voice. “The Thorn Pack will never welcome you back. Rola despises you, and the elders have already decided you’re a curse. Being involved with Ethan will only bring both of you more disaster. What happened three years ago was tragedy enough. Do you really want the same thing to happen again?”
His words felt like dull blades twisting into my chest, leaving an ache so sharp it stole my breath.
