Chapter 838:
When work finally ended, I gathered my documents and headed downstairs, planning to catch a taxi home as I usually did. The moment I stepped out of the office building, however, my gaze landed on the familiar figure leaning casually against a car, waiting for me.
Lianne’s POV:
Ethan stood there in a charcoal-gray trench coat, the golden glow of the setting sun softening the sharp edges of his profile. It was as though he sensed my gaze, because he looked up and greeted me with a gentle smile.
At that moment, I had to acknowledge that there was no safer place in the world than by his side.
No matter how drained I felt after a long day, the simple sight of him standing there, waiting for me, made every ounce of exhaustion melt away like snow under the sun.
“Have you been waiting long?” I asked eagerly as I hurried toward him.
He reached for my hand, the warmth of his fingertips slipping into my palm. “Not too long. Home, or a date?”
The word “date” caught me completely off guard. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d heard him say it.
Lately, we’d both been buried under an endless mountain of work and responsibilities, barely finding a moment to simply enjoy each other’s company. Without a second thought, I blurted out, “A date.”
After we settled into the car, my thoughts drifted back to Melisa’s post. The lingering doubt in my heart refused to be brushed aside. “By the way… Melisa is engaged. Do you know?”

For a fraction of a second, Ethan’s hold on the wheel tightened, barely visible, before he replied in a cold, distant voice, “I don’t know. She and I aren’t close.”
“Is that so?” I twisted in my seat to face him, my voice light but with a hint of curiosity. “You wouldn’t happen to be the fiancé, would you? Considering what you two used to be…”
The rest of my words caught in my throat as a heavy silence settled between us.
The air inside the car seemed to turn icy in an instant.
He neither denied it directly nor brushed it off with his usual laugh. Instead, he just held the wheel in silence, eyes locked on the road, not once looking my way.
The smile on my face froze.
I’d only meant it as a harmless joke, but his silence felt like a blunt knife, slowly carving into the most fragile corner of my heart.
“Ethan?” I called softly, my voice strained.
“Just don’t ask,” he said at last, a hint of weariness slipping through his composed voice. “Lianne, some things aren’t as they seem, but I can’t explain them to you now.”
With those seemingly casual words, he brushed aside every fear and doubt I’d been carrying, making them feel like nothing more than baseless suspicion and needless insecurity.
I stared at him for a long while.
In the end, I let out a helpless sigh, turned my head away, and watched the city lights race past.
I had this urge to just lose it entirely—to throw things, to shatter something, to scream until he finally gave me a real answer.
