Chapter 270:
A shrill blast of brakes tore through the stillness of the snow.
I snapped my head to the side and saw a yellow sports car shooting out from the intersection on the right, like a crazed beast with no reins, blowing through the red light and charging straight at us.
It was too near. There was no time to dodge.
I saw Ethan’s eyes sharpen.
In that razor-thin instant, driven by nothing but instinct, he yanked the steering wheel hard to the right, throwing the passenger side, where I was sitting, away from the path of the collision.
That left the driver’s side completely exposed to the sports car barreling toward us.
“No!”
A thunderous impact followed.

The force hurled the entire car into a violent roll across the snow.
The airbags exploded open at once, and my thoughts went utterly blank, my ears filled with a violent ringing. All I could do was curl myself around my stomach, protecting it on pure instinct.
I had no idea how much time passed before the faintest sliver of awareness came back.
Every bone in my body felt broken. I forced myself through the pain and turned my head shakily toward the driver’s seat.
“Ethan…”
He was slumped over the steering wheel, fragments of shattered windshield lodged across his back.
Blood ran from his temple in loose, trailing lines, drenching his costly black suit and smearing the halves of the contract stone we had only just been handed.
“Ethan! Wake up!”
I tried to reach for him, but before my fingertips could brush his clothes, a rush of dizziness swept over me.
The world in front of me began to tilt and blur, falling apart by the second.
Before the last of my consciousness gave out, all I saw was the spiraling white snow and the glaring blood spreading ac…
Lianne’s POV
When I opened my eyes, the hospital room struck me with its harsh whiteness, sterile and blinding. The air was heavy with the sharp sting of disinfectant.
My skull throbbed, a leaden weight pressing down on my senses. I tried to push myself upright, ready to call for help, when my gaze caught the figure in the bed next to mine.
Ethan.
His broad frame, which radiated sharp dominance, now looked awkward against the narrow hospital bed.
Thick white gauze wrapped his head, an IV tube snaking into his hand, his skin ghostly and pale.
His eyes remained closed. His chest barely rose with each shallow breath. He looked like fragile porcelain, ready to crumble with the slightest touch.
The memory of the crash hit me all over again, vivid and merciless.
He had thrown himself into the wheel without a second thought, shielding me from the full impact with his own body.
“Ethan…”
My heart lurched violently. I ignored the pain radiating through my own body and scrambled out of bed. Every step toward him felt urgent, desperate.
I clutched his icy hand, shaking it slightly, my voice breaking as I called his name.
“Ethan, wake up!”
