Chapter 313

Chapter 313:
At that moment, I had no strength left to deal with anyone’s affection, not even from someone as kind and considerate as Brian.
“Do you really love your mate that much?” Brian’s voice lowered all at once, carrying disappointment he did not bother to hide.
I lowered my eyes and answered softly, “I don’t want any more trouble in my life, Brian. I only want to stay by his side and live a peaceful life.”
Brian sounded unwilling to give up and asked, “And your mate… does he love you just as much?”
I stayed silent for a long while, my fingertips trembling faintly.
Then, I shut my eyes and told a lie so ridiculous that even I could barely believe it. “Of course. Every werewolf loves their mate. No one could ever love me more than he does. When you meet the one destined for you, you’ll know what it feels like to be loved with someone’s whole heart.”
After I cut off the mind link, all my strength seemed to leave me, and I flung my phone aside in exhaustion.
I knew I had lied.
Of course there were werewolves who did not love their mates. Like… Ethan.

My thoughts drifted back to the conversation with Jeremy.
I was afraid Jeremy had seen through the part I was playing, and even more afraid he would discover that the mate I claimed loved me so deeply did not exist at all.
Deep inside, I knew my feelings for Ethan had never fully died.
But I also knew with absolute certainty that I would never, and could never, go back to being with him.
Lianne’s POV:
The next morning, I forced myself to the resort construction site, dark shadows hanging heavily beneath my eyes.
From afar, I saw Brian and Alex standing on the temporary viewing platform, talking in low voices.
I froze.
After everything that had happened yesterday, I had assumed that once I said those things, Brian’s pride would make him either leave the country immediately or at the very least stay away from me for some time.
Alex was the first to notice me. His expression shifted ever so slightly. He looked strangely courteous, and even somewhat uncomfortable.
Before I could even walk over, he hastily found an excuse to leave, avoiding my gaze as he quickly walked away, leaving only Brian and me standing there in the salty wind, with the strain between us thick in the air. The silence was awkward.
I was just about to come up with some excuse and leave when Brian spoke.
He turned toward me, his eyes fixed on mine, his voice level but firm.
“Lianne, you don’t actually have a mate, do you?” he said.
My heart jolted. Forcing myself not to panic, I shot back, “Brian, I already made this very clear yesterday. I have a mate and a daughter. Please respect my personal life.”
“You do have a daughter.” He stepped closer, his voice lowered, but the weight in it only grew heavier. “But you told me she was only two years old. That isn’t true, is it?”
