Chapter 302:
Less than half an hour later, the door to my hospital room was shoved open, and Tracy rushed in with Ruby beside her.
“Who dared to hurt you? I’ll rip them to pieces!” Tracy barked as she strode over, every bit like a lioness guarding her own.
“Shh!” I quickly motioned for her to quiet down and pointed toward the corridor. “This is a hospital. Lower your voice. I’m fine now, see?”
I forced out a smile meant to reassure her, but Tracy was still burning with anger.
She put her hands on her waist and marched back and forth beside the bed, her tone sharp and unyielding. “Lianne, listen to me. Leave this terrible job! Is the Nexith Group really so short on people? Why does someone at your level have to deal with those thugs at the site in person? It’s far too dangerous!”
I knew she was worried about me, but reality pressed down on my heart like a boulder. “Tracy, you know how badly I need money right now. Silas’ expenses overseas and Ruby’s future… I can’t afford to give up at a time like this.”
“You need money? Then why don’t you go to—” Tracy was just about to say Ethan’s name, but I shot her a cold, warning look that made her stop at once.
“No way,” I said, my voice icy. “I will never ask him for help again for the rest of my life, and I will never meet him again. Three years ago, he died in my heart.”
Tracy turned her face aside in frustration but said nothing more.
Next to her, Ruby seemed to pick up on the tension in the room, and her bright eyes slowly reddened.

She toddled up to the bed and reached out her small, soft hand to lightly press against my forehead. “Mommy… does staying in the hospital hurt? I’ll make it better for you.”
Her thoughtful little gesture made my heart go soft instantly.
I pushed myself up with some effort, gathered her into my arms, and rested my chin against her soft hair.
“I’m not hurting. The moment I see you, all the pain disappears.”
Ruby looped her arms around my neck and announced with a serious expression, “Don’t be afraid, Mommy. I’ll protect you from now on! If anyone bullies you, I’ll bite them!”
I drew in a deep breath, breathing in my daughter’s comforting scent, and at last revealed the decision that had been weighing on me for so long. “Tracy, once this resort project is done, I’m taking Ruby and settling overseas as soon as possible. I’ve already notified the company and submitted an application for a transfer to one of the branches abroad.”
This place was simply too dangerous, after all. And it was not only because of those troublemaking locals, but also because it was far too near to Ethan.
I had to cut off every improper thought, considering what had happened yesterday during the attack, when I thought I heard Ethan’s voice.
