Chapter 744:
I stayed rooted to the spot. Overwhelmed by guilt and embarrassment, I quickly explained, “Jane, please don’t get the wrong idea. Frank and I are just friends. I’m genuinely happy that you two are together…”
“You don’t have to explain, Lianne,” she cut in with a wry smile. “I really don’t mind. In fact… two nights ago, he came home drunk, held me in his arms, and kept calling your name. Even then, I felt no anger.”
I was completely at a loss for words. My throat tightened so much that even breathing felt difficult.
“Why?” I finally managed to whisper.
“Because I don’t love him,” Jane replied, staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her elegant face was calm, yet completely devoid of emotion. In a low voice, she laid bare the cruel truth of their relationship. “And he doesn’t love me either. We’re nothing but pieces on the board of this pack. Both of us are choosing each other because it’s what our families want, and because it’s what keeps the pack stable.”
She slowly turned to face me and said, with quiet clarity, “In this world, ending up with the person you truly love is a blessing. Most people, like us, settle for someone who’s simply the right choice. That’s the reality we live in.”
Lianne’s POV
Jane leaned lightly against the sink, a vague smile playing on her lips as her fingers brushed across the cool marble surface. “Actually, there’s someone I love too. But he’s someone I’ll never be able to spend this lifetime with. That’s why I understand why Frank has held on for so many years. Lianne, now that you’re single, have you ever thought about giving him a chance?”
“No.” My answer was firm and unwavering. “Frank has always been my closest friend. He’s like an older brother to me. Besides, my heart has belonged to someone else for a long time. There’s no room left for anyone else.”
Jane lifted a brow, genuine curiosity flickering in her eyes. “If someone can linger in your heart for so long, he must be an extraordinary man.”
I lowered my eyes, quietly agreeing with her.

Extraordinary was far too small a word to describe Ethan. He was the most outstanding Alpha, the foolish man who had once placed his entire heart in my hands, only for me to break it.
The pain carved deep into my heart reminded me that Ethan and I would never have another chance together.
“Are the two of you… going to get married?” I asked in a low voice.
Jane was silent for a moment, then answered truthfully, “If Frank asks me to marry him, I’ll accept. Sometimes finding someone you’re compatible with matters more than being in love.”
I wanted to tell her that marriages built on compromise rarely found lasting happiness, but the words never left my mouth. After all, Ethan and I had loved each other with everything we had. Our love had been woven into every part of us, and even then, we still ended up apart.
I had no place to judge anyone else’s decision. Every person had to live with the choices they made.
