Chapter 922:
I forgot to pull away. I forgot to stop him. Even breathing seemed to slip from my mind. His familiar scent surrounded me, the same scent I had once longed for and associated with safety, warmth, and home.
My hand remained suspended between us, unable to decide whether to push him back or hold onto him.
Then reality returned with brutal clarity.
Ethan and I had ended things. Whatever history existed between us no longer gave him the right to cross that boundary.
I forced myself to react and bit down sharply on his tongue. A muffled sound of pain escaped him, and his arms finally loosened. He drew back slightly, his expression still hazy. His pupils were wide, his gaze unfocused, as though part of him remained trapped inside the hallucination.

Looking at him filled me with frustration and an ache I didn’t want to acknowledge.
I wiped my lips with the back of my hand, my voice coming out rougher than intended. “Ethan, look at me carefully. This isn’t a dream, and I’m not whoever you’re looking for. You can’t do this.”
He said nothing for several seconds. Then something seemed to click inside his mind. His expression gradually hardened, and the warmth disappeared from his features. “Sorry.”
That single word felt colder than it should have, abruptly severing whatever fragile connection had existed between us.
And then I understood. He hadn’t known it was me. He had mistaken me for someone else. That kiss had never belonged to me. It had been meant for the woman occupying his thoughts.
I already knew the answer would hurt, but I couldn’t stop myself from asking. “Who did you think I was?”
He refused to meet my eyes. Instead, he turned his face aside and answered in an emotionless tone, “You should go. Noah shouldn’t have called you.”
“Noah asked me to come because he needed someone to look after you. I wasn’t the one chasing after you.” I stared directly at him and didn’t back down. “But you kissed me. You crossed a line, Ethan. You owe me an explanation.”
He turned toward the window. Sunlight streamed through the narrow gaps between the blinds, painting alternating bands of brightness and shadow across his face.
His mouth tightened, his jaw rigid as he deliberately kept silent.
The longer he avoided my question, the heavier the emptiness inside me became.
Eventually, a name escaped before I could stop it. “Is it Melisa?”
He gave me nothing. He didn’t even turn around. I kept telling myself not to read too much into his silence, but the situation had already pushed my thoughts beyond anything I could control. Every possibility I tried to dismiss returned even stronger.
I reached forward, placed both hands against his face, and turned him toward me.
His cheeks were scorching beneath my palms.
