Chapter 583:
As she inserted the IV with practiced ease, she spoke honestly. “This is about the engagement arrangement, isn’t it? Listen carefully, Lianne. My family may want me with him, but that isn’t my choice. I’ve never viewed your Alpha romantically. If anything… I feel sorry for him.”
She paused for a second, then sighed. “He’s completely devoted to you. To keep you from misunderstanding even once, he’s intentionally maintained distance from me to an almost cruel degree. Very few wolves would go that far.”
I moved closer to the bed and clasped Ethan’s overheated hand inside mine.
Maybe he recognized my touch. His eyelashes trembled faintly before he forced his eyes open a fraction.
“Don’t leave without telling me,” he whispered weakly, the words barely audible.
The ache in my chest became unbearable. I squeezed his hand tighter as tears blurred my vision. “I’m staying here, Ethan. I won’t run away again.”
Hearing that seemed to calm him slightly. The tension throughout his body gradually eased before his eyes drifted shut once more.
Still, his fingers remained locked around mine.
Even asleep, he refused to release me.

It took nearly five days before Ethan fully regained his strength.
Before departing, Melisa quietly explained, “His collapse wasn’t caused only by the injury. Mental exhaustion and constant anxiety played a huge role.”
Only then did I begin to understand the weight he had carried in silence.
The moment his condition improved, Ethan buried himself in work again immediately.
The hospital suite quickly turned into a makeshift office filled with meetings, paperwork, signatures, and endless responsibilities waiting for him.
Lianne’s POV
Any spare moment I had usually ended with me stretched across the couch, quietly taking candid photos of Ethan while he stayed absorbed in work at his laptop.
There was something intimidating about the way he conducted business calls. Every instruction he delivered carried confidence and control, making him appear distant and untouchable. Still, seeing him like that awakened a strange excitement inside me that I couldn’t quite explain.
That evening, his conference dragged on for hours and didn’t finish until late.
I’d intended to stay awake so we could eat together afterward, but the endless stream of corporate discussions bored me senseless. Before I realized it, I’d drifted off on the couch.
Half-asleep, I suddenly felt myself being lifted. A scent I knew all too well surrounded me, warm and reassuring.
Blinking drowsily, I looked up and found Ethan staring back at me with those deep, captivating eyes.
He carried me carefully toward the bed.
I looped my arms around his shoulders and whispered sleepily, “Done already? Please tell me I didn’t accidentally appear on camera looking ridiculous while I was asleep.”
A quiet laugh escaped him, the sound rumbling through his chest beneath my hand. “Ridiculous? I’d proudly show everyone the woman I plan to spend my life with.”
Curled against him, I wanted to tell him about all the funny little moments from the past few days. But after a moment, I sensed a change in him.
His breaths turned uneven, harsher than before, and the way he held me became startlingly tight.
“Ethan?” I murmured, shifting slightly.
