Chapter 779:
I deliberately kept my face cold, refusing to let him see how shaken I really was. “I don’t need you cooking for me. Don’t push yourself over something so unnecessary.”
Ethan paused for only a moment. Instead of arguing, he nodded obediently, his expression carrying an almost humble gentleness. “Alright. I’ll listen to you. From now on, I’ll just order food. I only wanted you to wake up to a warm meal.”
I sat at the dining table, staring blankly at the bowl of oatmeal in front of me, but I had no appetite whatsoever.
The days of despair and heavy drinking had left my stomach painfully fragile. Fighting back the nausea threatening to rise, I forced myself to take slow, mechanical bites.
Ethan sat across from me, his eyes never leaving my face.
As he noticed how much thinner I’d become, pain flickered across his expression. Carefully, he suggested, “Lianne, after breakfast, how about we go for a walk? Ruby and Silas kept asking about you all night yesterday. They miss you so much.”

The moment I heard my children’s names, my fingers tightened around the spoon, my hand trembling ever so slightly.
After sitting in silence for a long while, I offered no refusal. That quiet acceptance brought visible relief to his face.
I managed to finish half the bowl before a dull ache spread through my stomach.
The moment Ethan noticed my discomfort, he reached over, took my hand, and gently removed the bowl. “Don’t force it. Eating too much after your stomach’s been empty will just make you sick. I’ll have them prepare a light soup for you later.”
His eyes suddenly dropped to beneath my collarbone, where the bruises and scratches from yesterday’s struggle on the rooftop were still faintly visible.
“You’re still too weak, and those injuries haven’t healed yet. Let me put some medicine on them.”
With that, he stood up, retrieved the first-aid kit, and prepared to treat my wounds.
Almost instinctively, I leaned away, clutching my collar tightly as I looked at him with guarded eyes. “They’re almost healed. There’s no need.”
I couldn’t let him get any closer. I was afraid his touch would shake the resolve I’d worked so hard to build.
Ethan’s hand froze. Then, with a resigned sigh, he placed the ointment into my palm instead. His voice softened, as though he were soothing a skittish child. “Fine. You do it yourself. Just promise me you’ll take proper care of those wounds. Don’t make me worry.”
I looked down at the ointment in my hand, the words slipping out before I could stop them. “Melisa said that if you don’t stay with me, she’ll agree to her family’s arrangement and marry you.”
“Don’t believe a word she says.” Ethan’s reply came without a second’s pause, steady and sure. “When the elders tried to push me into marrying someone else, I refused. Lianne, you’re the only one I’ve ever wanted.”
He leaned across the table and gently wrapped his fingers around mine, his eyes filled with unwavering sincerity. “Ignore whatever anyone else tells you. Just trust me. Right now, your priority is getting better.”
