Chapter 703:
“The Pack Council seldom hands down death sentences to pregnant women,” I said flatly, speaking nothing but the truth. “She’s trying to conceive so she can avoid punishment. As long as she’s carrying a pup, the court will have no choice but to uphold its so-called humanitarian values.”
Noticing the shock on Lianne’s face, along with the trace of fear lingering in her eyes, I lifted a hand to gently tap her forehead before pulling her into my embrace to reassure her.
“There’s nothing to fear,” I whispered beside her ear, my voice calm and unwavering. “Ivy’s little schemes won’t work on me. If she can deliberately get herself pregnant, then I can just as easily make sure she suffers an ‘accidental’ miscarriage. The only person I’ve ever shown compassion or mercy to is you.”
As for everyone else? Whether they lived or died was of no concern to me.
By the time we reached the entrance of the scenic area, Jeremy was casually leaning against the roomy SUV with a fruit platter in hand, patiently feeding Tracy bite-sized pieces of fruit one after another.

The way he indulged Tracy’s every request reminded me of the years after Lianne vanished.
Back then, I buried myself in alcohol, calling her name over and over even when I was dead drunk.
Jeremy used to ridicule me, saying I was digging my own grave by devoting myself to a single woman.
Now that he had fallen head over heels himself and was savoring every moment of it, I had to bite my tongue to keep from throwing his old lines back at him.
“Take it easy, sweetheart,” Jeremy said with a helpless sigh.
Yet Tracy, bold as ever, still insisted on running after Ruby and Silas despite being pregnant, claiming the baby she carried was stronger than anyone thought.
Jeremy’s face instantly drained of color, and he didn’t dare let Tracy out of his sight for even a moment.
Ruby and Silas were obviously completely won over by the way Tracy doted on them. The moment they heard her call their names, they eagerly scampered over to her. Tracy truly had a natural gift for connecting with young children.
I clasped Lianne’s hand, drawing comfort from the warmth of her palm, as a regret I had buried for years suddenly resurfaced.
“When you were carrying our children, I wasn’t there,” I sighed, my voice rough as I looked toward the children playing in the distance. “From the day you became pregnant until the day you gave birth, I wasn’t beside you when you needed me most. Lianne, that’s a regret I’ll bear for the rest of my life.”
From this day forward, I swore I would never again miss a single moment of my children’s lives, not even for an instant.
Lianne froze, obviously caught off guard. She probably assumed Tracy’s pregnancy had stirred these emotions in me. After a brief pause, a blush spread across her cheeks, and she hurriedly said, “Come on, let’s get in the car and go.”
The entire day slipped by in the quiet embrace of the mountains.
We set up tents, cast our fishing lines into the stream, and admired the sunset as it bathed half the sky in rich golden colors.
