Chapter 913:
Silas’s eyes brightened, while Ruby clapped excitedly. A moment later, the two of them were racing around the room, laughing and chasing one another. Their cheerful voices soon restored some liveliness to the house. I watched them disappear down the hallway, my expression gradually turning solemn. Still, I would find somewhere else to live. If I could avoid running into Ethan, perhaps the distance would eventually allow me to heal. Then I could put everything behind me and devote myself to raising my children without constantly being reminded of what I had lost.
Once my mind was made up, I contacted Tracy and told her about my decision. She answered almost at once, “I’ve got an apartment that’s vacant. Nobody’s using it, so you can move in.”
I immediately declined the offer. “Thank you, Tracy, but I’d rather not. With two children, I need somewhere roomy enough for all of us. I’ll look for a place myself.”
“How exactly do you plan to handle everything alone? Working while looking after two children is already exhausting. Then there’s packing, moving furniture, getting everything organized… Are you planning to carry all that heavy stuff yourself too? Do you want to injure yourself?”
I laughed softly. “Don’t worry. Once I finish the project I’m working on, I’ll resign from Voss Group. Then I’ll have much more time for the children. I’ll be able to take care of our household myself.”
There was a brief pause on her end. “Then at least look somewhere near me. That way, if you ever need assistance, I can get there quickly. Jeremy is practically never home before late evening anyway. Sitting around by myself gets boring.”
I shook my head despite knowing she couldn’t see me. “Tracy, you have your own household to look after. I don’t want to impose on you. You’ve already done far more for me than I can repay, and I’m genuinely grateful.”
She exhaled in resignation. “You’re really stubborn. Fine. I’ll help you look. If I come across somewhere suitable, I’ll send you the details.”

With Tracy’s assistance, I soon came across an apartment that felt right. It had three bedrooms, plenty of sunlight, and sat in a peaceful neighborhood. More importantly, the children’s school was only about ten minutes away by car. The moment I stepped inside, I knew I wanted it.
Unexpectedly, relocating wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d imagined. By the time half a day had passed, our belongings had been boxed, transported, and arranged in the new place.
Later, I stood alone in the old living room. The familiar surroundings were filled with traces of the life I had once shared with Ethan. An emptiness settled heavily inside me.
For a moment, I was lost in thought.
Once, I would have assumed Ethan had secretly taken care of everything. He would have arranged for people to come, pack our belongings, transport them, and handle every troublesome detail before I even had to ask.
But that version of things belonged to the past. I understood now that he no longer cared about me. He wouldn’t even answer when I called. Why would he possibly concern himself with helping me relocate?
A faint, self-mocking laugh escaped me. Then I turned around and pulled the door shut.
Tracy remained with me throughout the afternoon. She carefully placed Ruby’s tiny dresses inside the wardrobe and arranged Silas’s collection of picture books on the shelves.
Watching her move tirelessly from one task to another filled me with an unexpected sense of comfort.
