Chapter 116:
She had skillfully used my status, along with the guilt I felt toward her, to create buzz for Sparkle.
This was how she was taking revenge on me. I understood that perfectly well. It was her wordless punishment for me.
For the sake of the bigger picture, and for everything my grandfather had invested in it, I swallowed my anger and cooperated with her through the entire performance. But that didn’t mean I was going to let it slide.
“Ethan…”

A soft, choked voice broke through my thoughts.
I frowned and turned to look. Ivy was making her way toward me. In the dim garage, she looked weak and unsteady.
Her eyes were red from crying, and the tip of her nose was faintly flushed, making her look especially pitiful.
“Will you have dinner with me tonight?” She caught hold of my sleeve and looked up at me, her eyes full of pleading. “I haven’t had a moment alone with you in so long. I miss you.”
A surge of annoyance rose in me, and my first instinct was to shake her off. My voice turned colder. “You should go home. There are reporters all over the place tonight. This isn’t the right time.”
“I’m not scared of reporters. I’m only scared I won’t get to see you.” Ivy still wouldn’t let go. “Are you avoiding me, Ethan?”
“Be sensible, Ivy.” I took a deep breath, trying to stay patient. “I promised my grandfather I’d get along with Lianne for now. His heart condition can’t handle any stress. If the reporters catch us meeting in private, you know what will happen.”
At my words, Ivy’s body went rigid. Then, all at once, tears spilled down her face, and her voice wavered with panic. “I know you’re worried about him, but I’m really scared. I can’t sleep at night. I’m scared you’ll fall in love with Lianne and stop wanting me. Ethan, you’re everything I have. I can’t bear to lose you.”
Looking at her in tears, I remembered the way she had always acted gentle and considerate around me.
She had once told me she regretted what she had done to Lianne and that she never should have returned to interfere with our lives.
Yet now, the way she clung to me made me feel faintly smothered.
“Didn’t you keep saying you owed Lianne?” I looked at her with a cold, steady gaze and lowered my voice. “If it comes to that, I’ll send you overseas and give you enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life. You won’t have to worry about a thing.”
As soon as those words left my mouth, Ivy went completely still.
Shock flickered through the eyes that were usually so soft.
Apparently, she had never imagined I had truly thought about making her leave.
“No, please don’t.” She suddenly shook her head hard and lunged into my arms, wrapping both arms tightly around my waist. “I don’t want money. I only want you! Ethan, you can’t leave me. Have you forgotten everything I suffered through?”
