Chapter 428:
“As long as you don’t confess anything, she can’t do a thing,” I assured him calmly. “Silas, you’re my son. You should know how to remain calm under pressure. Be a good boy. Whether your mommy and I get back together depends entirely on you.”
“But you’re teaching me how to lie!” he protested, puffing out his cheeks as his little face reddened with frustration.
Placing the knife aside, I bent down and lifted him onto the marble countertop so we were at eye level.
“Listen carefully, son.” I looked straight into his eyes, my voice serious and sincere. “If I don’t find a way to keep her here, she’s leaving tonight with Frank. He is my rival. He wants to take your mommy away. Do you want that to happen?”
Silas went still, tilting his head as he considered my words. Then, as though realization had struck him, he murmured, “Oh… I understand now. Daddy, you’re scared of being left without a wife, aren’t you?”
His straightforward remark caught me by surprise, and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. “You could put it that way. So if you want our family to be together, I’ll need your help.”
“Fine,” Silas replied reluctantly, giving a small nod. Then he looked at me with concern. “But Mommy is really angry. The way she looked at you earlier, it seemed like she wanted to tear you apart.”
“Don’t worry. I can handle it.” Then I took the chance to ask, “Silas, tell me something. Where is your sister? Why wasn’t she with you?”

The moment his sister was mentioned, Silas immediately slipped into his usual talkative mode.
“Her name is Ruby. Tracy looks after her. Mommy was worried you’d take us away, so she’s been keeping us hidden,” Silas explained. “Ruby is really pretty. She looks exactly like Mommy, but she’s even more stubborn. And she absolutely loves candy. Especially those shiny fruit-flavored hard candies. If someone offers her candy, she’ll happily follow them anywhere. She’s so naive…”
“She loves candy…” I repeated.
As soon as those words sank in, a memory came flooding back.
I suddenly thought of the little girl I’d met during a business trip to Brinewick not too long ago.
She had a round, adorable face, large sparkling eyes, and an energetic, spirited expression.
Back then, I had felt that she seemed strangely familiar, and I had even experienced an unexplainable desire to pick her up and hold her.
So that was the reason. That powerful instinctive connection I’d felt, the pull of blood ties, had begun even then.
I drew in a deep breath, my heart racing uncontrollably. An intense and overwhelming sense of joy surged through me, nearly sweeping me away.
“Silas,” I whispered, my gaze bright with resolve, “you’ll be reunited with your sister before long.”
In the end, I personally prepared an entire table full of dishes. The fish was grilled to perfection, its rich aroma spreading throughout the dining room.
During the past three years, I had become accustomed to drowning myself in alcohol deep into the night. But because of Silas, I had learned how to become a careful and devoted father.
