Chapter 119:
I went still, then my hand shook as I pressed it to my still-flat stomach, tears rushing into my eyes at once.
“Baby,” I whispered, “did you hear those rumors too? Does it hurt you to hear them?”
After the surge of happiness, an even heavier sadness followed.
“Baby, I’m sorry. Your father is with another woman right now.” I softly rubbed my stomach, as though I could comfort the little life inside through my touch. “Don’t be scared. Once I finish dealing with everything here, we’ll leave. We’ll go somewhere no one knows us. Just the two of us. Our life will only get better and better.”
Just as I was sinking into this mix of softness and sorrow, the bathroom door was suddenly shoved open from outside.
I cried out and instinctively shrank back into the water, snatching up the bath towel nearby to cover my chest.
Ethan had actually come back.
Lianne’s POV
Ethan stood in the doorway with his suit jacket hanging over one arm and his tie slightly crooked.
He looked at me in the bathtub, soaked through, and something unreadable flickered across his eyes.
“Why are you back so early?” I asked numbly, my voice low and muffled.

Ethan gave a tight, angry laugh, then walked in and flung his jacket onto the rack beside him. “I told you I’d come back for dinner.”
I forced myself to stay composed and met his eyes evenly. “You used to stay away all night. I thought this time would be no exception. After all, whenever Ivy feels unwell, you’re usually the one guarding her through the night.”
Ethan went still, a slight frown forming between his brows. “I only took her to the hospital. The doctor said she was fine, so I came back. Lianne, when I tell you I’ll come back, I mean it.”
His hurry to explain himself did not move me in the slightest.
How many times could this on-time return possibly happen? Once? Twice?
The moment Ivy beckoned, he would still go to her without the slightest pause.
If he could not completely cast that woman aside, then this charity-like tenderness was no different from before.
“Okay,” I answered lightly and turned my face away from him. “You can go now. I need to change.”
“Lianne.” His voice was low when he said my name.
I lifted my eyes to him, wondering what he wanted to say next.
“Who were you talking to just now?” He moved a step closer. His tall frame threw a shadow over me, swallowing me up.
My heart lurched, and my breathing locked up at once.
“No one. I was just talking to myself.” I kept my face composed, doing my best to hide the panic underneath.
“Talking to yourself?” Ethan let out a cold scoff. He bent down without warning and planted both hands on the rim of the tub. The forceful scent of Alpha pheromones flooded my senses in an instant.
He was so near that I could see my own frightened reflection in his eyes.
