Chapter 38:
Hire a few more assistants?
Without thinking, I brushed a hand over my stomach, still flat for now.
A life that belonged to both Ethan and me was growing there in silence.
The weight of that secret pressed down on me so hard I could barely breathe.

I meant to keep it hidden until my body could no longer conceal it, and then I would find my chance to disappear for good.
I had no idea what Ethan would do if he ever found out about the baby.
Would he force me to get rid of it? Would he do it to make way for Ivy’s child? Or would he simply take the baby from me?
I knew better than anyone what it meant for the Thorn Pack to have an heir with Alpha blood.
I could not let him discover the truth.
“I do have one request,” I said, putting down my knife and fork as I met Ethan’s eyes squarely, “though I doubt you’ll agree to it.”
Ethan’s POV:
“Anything but resigning,” I reminded Lianne, and there was enough chill in my voice to make it clear I was serious.
Lianne went still for a beat, then gave a small shake of her head, a rueful little smile pulling at her mouth. “That’s not what I want to say.”
“Then tell me what you want.” I motioned for her to go on.
“What I want is to keep managing the Sparkle jewelry line, same as I always have. What do you think?” Her voice stayed even, but there was something faint in her gaze, something so slight it still felt like she was quietly testing me.
I said nothing. My fingers moved along the edge of my cup while my thoughts ran wild.
The truth was, I did not fully trust her.
I was afraid she would hold a grudge against Ivy over everything that had happened and use her power over the project to make things difficult for her.
I knew I was not offering Lianne the trust she deserved. But I was the Alpha of the Thorn Pack, and I had long been used to keeping every situation firmly in my hands. I could not pretend Ivy’s situation did not matter.
When my silence dragged on, the glimmer of hope in Lianne’s eyes slowly went out.
She let out a quiet, bitter laugh, dropped her gaze, and took up her utensils again, muttering, “Just forget I brought it up.”
As I looked at her lonely side profile, something in my chest clenched hard. The ache from the mate bond struck me again.
“You can ask for something else.” I spoke at last, trying to break the tension. “Money, property, or maybe a transfer to a branch company…”
“There’s no need.” She cut me off, and her voice was glacial.
The rest of dinner passed under a suffocating silence.
Now and then, the sharp sound of cutlery striking the tableware was the only thing that disturbed the stillness.
