Chapter 188:
He walked straight toward me, the corners of his lips lifting in the slightest smile. “What, shocked? You don’t recognize me anymore?”
I pushed myself upright with the help of the table, my legs numb after sitting there too long.
“Weren’t you away on a business trip?” I asked, a trace of grievance slipping into my voice without my even realizing it.
Ethan did not answer. Instead, he reached for me and closed his warm hand around my freezing one without hesitation.
His palm was dry and steady, and the moment he touched me, I felt a little calmer.
“I’m here now,” he said, holding my hand tightly. “Come on. I’m taking you home.”
As we walked out of the police station, I could feel that my body had already been pushed to its limit.
I didn’t even have the strength left to say anything to Ethan. My head tipped to one side, and I let it rest against his shoulder.
Maybe it was because I had finally let my guard down, or maybe it was because being beside him made me feel safe. Before long, I lost consciousness and drifted off to sleep.

Ethan’s POV:
Lianne’s body tipped toward me, and my grip on the steering wheel tightened for a moment as I unconsciously eased off the speed.
She was fast asleep. Her faint breaths brushed my neck, and there was something so delicate about her then, as though she had only just come through an ordeal.
By the time we reached home, I couldn’t bear to wake her, so I got out, went around to the passenger side, and carefully gathered her into my arms.
She weighed even less than I had imagined, so light she was almost insubstantial.
Carrying her upstairs, I pushed open the door to the master bedroom.
Perhaps it was the shift in surroundings, but she slowly opened her eyes, still half-asleep. They were hazy and unfocused as they rested on me.
“Are we home?” Her voice came out rough and heavy with drowsiness.
“We’re home.” I lowered my voice, and even my breathing turned instinctively softer. “Go back to sleep on the bed.”
She seemed to obey, or perhaps she simply felt safe in my arms. She gave a vague murmur of reply, then shut her eyes again and nestled closer against me.
I laid her down carefully in the middle of the bed.
My eyes lingered on her rumpled work clothes, and after a brief hesitation, I still reached out to straighten them and make her more comfortable.
I moved slowly, and now and then, my fingertips brushed across her warm, silky skin, stirring a faint prickling sensation through me.
One piece at a time, I took off her outer layers until only a thin silk nightdress remained on her.
Moonlight spilled over the lines of her body, leaving them half hidden and half revealed, and the sight made something tighten inside me as my throat moved involuntarily.
I forced down the desire rising in me and pulled the covers over her.
