Chapter 145:
“Enough.” I cut her off coldly, my brow furrowing. “Lianne isn’t that kind of person. She would never intentionally try to take someone’s life. I’ll find out what really happened. You don’t get to throw around accusations here.”
Noticing my anger, Ava shrank back a little and didn’t dare continue, though she still mumbled under her breath about how tragic Ivy was.
I sat beside the bed and looked at Ivy’s bloodless face.
It was her birthday today. I had said I would be with her, and yet she had ended up here like this. The guilt kept eating away at my mind.
“Ethan… don’t leave…” Ivy whispered faintly in her unconscious haze, her fingers twitching in the air as if reaching for something.
“I’m here.” I closed my hand around her icy fingers and looked over at Ava. “Go home. I’ll stay with her tonight.”
I pulled out my phone, meaning to call Lianne and explain.

I had rejected her call, after all. With her temperament, she was probably curled up under the blanket crying by now.
But when I called, I found her phone had been turned off.
A faint but unshakable unease rose in me. The pull of the mate bond had already grown so weak it was barely there.
Ethan’s POV:
“Is Lianne still angry?” I muttered under my breath, then sent her a message. “Ivy was badly hurt, and burns cover twenty-three percent of her body. I have to stay at the hospital tonight and take care of her. Stay home and wait for me. I’ll be back tomorrow, and I’ll explain everything to you.”
After sending the text, I leaned back in the chair and shut my eyes to rest.
Early the next morning, I tried calling Lianne again, but her phone was still turned off.
The uneasiness in my chest grew heavier and heavier. It felt as though something important was slipping out of my life entirely.
Soon after that, Ivy woke up. As soon as she saw me, tears began running down her face. She clutched my hand tightly and would not let go. “Ethan, I was terrified. The fire was so big. I really thought I’d never see you again. Why didn’t you pick up when I called? Are you going to leave me behind?”
All I could do was comfort her and let her cry against me.
When the doctor came in to check on her, I stepped out of the room.
Around noon, a number of senior crew members and cast came by to visit. I had no interest in seeing them, so I slipped away downstairs, intending to smoke in the garden.
As I walked past the corner by the emergency stairwell, I heard two voices I recognized.
They were Mason and Frank.
“Ivy really knows how to stage a scene,” Mason said quietly, his tone edged with mockery. “Ava made a huge spectacle of it in front of the press. Twenty-three percent burns, severe tissue damage. Does she really think everyone is that gullible?”
