Chapter 876:
Lianne’s POV
Ruby’s cheerful face instantly fell, and she pouted in disappointment. “Daddy didn’t answer…”

A trace of disappointment tugged at my own heart as well, but I smiled gently and comforted her. “He’s probably busy right now. Let’s try calling him one more time.”
The second call rang only a few times before it was answered.
Ethan’s weary voice came through the speaker, cold and distant. “Hello?”
Before I had a chance to speak, Ruby eagerly leaned closer to the phone and called out in her sweet little voice, “Daddy!”
The line fell silent for a brief moment.
When Ethan spoke again, his voice had noticeably softened. The exhaustion was still there, but the icy distance had melted away. “Ruby? Why are you still awake?”
“I miss you, Daddy!” Ruby held the phone tightly with both hands, her childish voice full of excitement. “When will you be back? I miss you so, so much, and Mommy misses you too! She said just now…”
My heart skipped a beat. I hurriedly reached over and covered Ruby’s mouth, lowering my voice in a flustered whisper. “Ruby!”
She wriggled free from my hand anyway and blurted out, “Mommy said she misses you too!”
Heat instantly rushed to my face.
Another brief silence followed.
My grip tightened around the phone as my heart pounded nervously. How would Ethan respond? Would he dismiss it coldly? Would he simply hang up?
Instead, he stayed on the line.
When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet, almost sounding like a weary sigh. “I see. I miss you both too.”
Ruby’s face immediately lit up with joy. She happily chatted with him for a little while longer before finally ending the call with obvious reluctance. Handing the phone back to me, she beamed from ear to ear. “Mommy, Daddy said he misses us too!”
I took the phone from her, my heart aching with both warmth and sadness.
Ruby was far more perceptive than most people realized. She couldn’t understand the complicated situation between Ethan and me, but in her own innocent way, she had spoken the words I had never found the courage to say, and it left my heart trembling ever so slightly.
Not long afterward, my phone rang again. It was Ethan.
“Are the kids asleep?” he asked, his voice once again calm and distant.
“I’ve already sent them back to their room,” I answered immediately.
Without warning, his tone turned sharp. “Lianne, did you deliberately use Ruby to interrupt me? Can’t you even let me mourn Rola in peace?”
My chest tightened painfully. “No, Ethan, that’s not what happened.” I hurried to explain. “Ruby said she missed you, so I…”
“Enough.” His icy voice cut me off before I could finish. “I don’t want to hear it.”
