Chapter 431:
Silas’s bedroom was large and spacious, yet it felt more like an office than a child’s room.
There were no plush toys, no colorful artwork decorating the walls. Even the bedding was a muted shade of dark gray.
On the large desk, three powerful computer monitors sat neatly arranged, their displays occasionally flashing lines of complicated code.
I knew Silas had never cared for childish decorations. His interests had always centered around logic and technology.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I rested my hand on his stomach and gently rubbed slow, comforting circles through the fabric of his thin pajamas.
“Does it still hurt?” I asked quietly, unable to conceal the concern in my voice. “If it’s serious, I’ll take you to the hospital right away.”
Silas lifted his bright eyes to meet mine, his long eyelashes trembling faintly.
He said nothing at first. Instead, he stubbornly shook his head before reaching out and tightly grasping the hem of my shirt.
“It feels better now… Mommy, don’t go. Stay here with me, okay?” His voice was gentle and sweet, carrying a subtle note of pleading that was impossible to refuse.
Watching Silas act like this, it felt as though the softest corner of my heart had been pierced. The guilt nearly overwhelmed me.
For the past three years, I had exhausted myself trying to escape Ethan’s reach while working overseas to earn enough money to provide my children with a better future.
I had transformed myself into a machine that never stopped working, and I kept packing up and moving, changing places, hiding, never staying anywhere for long.
I had always believed that giving my children a comfortable life was proof of my love. But I had failed to realize that during stormy nights, or after waking from bad dreams, what they truly needed most was my presence.
Filled with regret, I gently ran my fingers through his soft hair and, almost unconsciously, asked, “Silas… do you like him?”
Lianne’s POV
I knew Silas understood exactly who I meant, even though I never spoke that man’s name aloud.
Silas knitted his little brows together, his young face, which looked remarkably like Ethan’s, filled with obvious inner conflict.
He remained quiet for a long while before finally replying with a seriousness far beyond his age. “Mommy, if he had never hurt you before, then I would like him. He’s very good to me. He cooks for me, teaches me self-defense, and even removes all the fish bones before I eat. But… if he ever made you suffer, I could never forgive him.”
I was stunned, my chest tightening as tears gathered in my eyes.
“He didn’t,” I lied, forcing out a strained smile. “He never mistreated me. We separated because we had some differences, and there were misunderstandings between us that we couldn’t work through.”
