Chapter 509:
Leaning against the headboard, he scrolled through the tablet with long, steady fingers, patiently explaining the project proposals that seemed impossible for me to understand.
I stared at the endless pages of dense clauses, my head beginning to ache.
“If the other party hides a loophole like this in the contract, is there any way to spot it beforehand?” I pointed to an ambiguous clause involving equity pledges and asked sincerely.
Ethan turned toward me, a trace of mischief flashing in his eyes.
Instead of answering right away, he wrapped an arm around my waist and drew me closer.
“I can teach you,” he murmured, lowering his voice until his warm breath brushed my skin. “But, Lianne, I don’t work for free. What are you planning to give me in return?”
My body instantly tensed as I understood exactly what kind of “payment” he wanted.
“Ethan!” I protested, shoving him away in embarrassment, still careful not to use too much force. Lowering my voice, I complained, “You promised this morning we’d only have sex once today. How can you break your promise so quickly?”

Completely unbothered, he raised an eyebrow while his hand lightly traced my waist. “What we agreed on this morning only applied to this morning. Right now, you’re asking for additional services.” His lips curved slightly. “Naturally, extra services require extra compensation.”
Exasperated by his shameless logic, I abandoned the argument altogether. Stuffing the tablet back into his hands, I huffed, “Fine. Then I won’t learn. I was never cut out for business anyway. And if I stop asking questions, you’ll stop bothering me.”
Noticing that I was genuinely annoyed, Ethan finally relented.
He gently squeezed the back of my neck, as though soothing an irritated kitten, and the teasing disappeared from his expression.
“Alright. I’ll stop teasing.” His tone turned serious. “Let’s discuss something important instead.” After a brief pause, his gaze shifted toward the window. “I want Ruby and Silas brought here.”
My heart tightened instantly. Without thinking, I blurted out, “Is… is this Rola’s idea?”
The memory of the arrangement Rola had previously asked Adrian to present, the one involving the children, immediately made my chest tighten and my breathing uneven.
Ethan seemed to notice my anxiety. He took my hand, his grip firm and reassuring. “No. This is my decision.” His voice was steady. “Lianne, look at me.”
I slowly lifted my head and met his eyes. They were calm, unwavering, and filled with determination.
“The children belong to us. Their future and their choices should be decided by us alone.” His expression remained resolute. “This has nothing to do with the Thorn Pack. Do you understand?”
As I looked at him, at the gentleness and conviction in his face, my nose suddenly stung.
At that moment, I truly realized what an extraordinary father he was. He was willing to stand against the immense pressure of the entire pack just to protect our children.
Compared to him, I felt painfully inadequate.
Over the years, I had given Ruby and Silas far too little of my time and even less of the stability they deserved.
