Chapter 786:
The commanding presence unique to an Alpha enveloped me completely. Even through our clothes, I could feel the strong rhythm of his heartbeat pounding against my chest, shaking me to my core.
“Mmph…” The kiss stole my breath. Heat rushed to my face, and the familiar closeness I had missed for so long left my heart racing with discomfort and frustration.
I shoved him away with all my strength and rushed into the bathroom. Only after splashing several handfuls of cold water onto my face did the burning sensation finally begin to fade.
When I walked back out, Ethan was standing beside the window with his phone pressed to his ear.
Rain hammered against the roof, but it couldn’t mask the coldness in his voice. It was the same decisive tone he used when dealing with business, completely different from the warmth he always showed me.
“…Yes, I already sent the report. Review it carefully, especially the neural fatigue and metabolic indicators.”
After ending the call, he looked at me and said plainly, “That was Melisa. I forwarded your test results to her and asked her to examine them more closely. She’s far more experienced in this field than regular doctors.”
I felt a dull ache in my heart and lowered my eyes. “You really don’t have to keep bothering her.”
He raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Are you jealous?”
“No,” I answered at once, though my voice betrayed me with the slightest tremble. “I just don’t want to trouble someone when it isn’t necessary.”

That night, I couldn’t sleep. Listening to the steady sound of Ethan’s breathing from the living room, I tiptoed out barefoot.
A flash of lightning lit up the apartment, revealing Ethan curled up on the sofa.
He was simply too tall and broad for it. His frame was forced into an awkward position that couldn’t possibly be comfortable.
I stared at his unbelievably handsome face. Without thinking, I stretched out my hand to touch him. Just as my fingertips were about to brush his skin, I stopped myself.
“If you feel sorry for me, why won’t you admit it?”
His eyes snapped open, his voice calm and alert, with no hint that he’d been asleep at all.
Caught off guard, I instinctively tried to pull away, but he caught my wrist and pulled me down to the edge of the sofa.
“Lianne,” he said, staring straight into my eyes, “do you still love me?”
I struggled weakly, but it was pointless. In that moment, every wall I had built around my heart crumbled.
I slowly sank onto the carpet, leaning against him as the emotions I’d been suppressing finally poured out.
“I just can’t love you, Ethan.” My voice cracked as I spoke. “Whenever I close my eyes, I see my father’s face before he died. And I know you can’t truly stop caring about Rola. She’s your family. Instead of spending the rest of our lives trapped between hatred and guilt, it’s better if everything ends now.”
