Chapter 160:
Explain what? That she had thrown herself at me? That I had never touched her?
I closed my eyes and forced down the bitterness surging inside me.
When I opened them again, I straightened my slightly rumpled dress and walked down the stairs in my high heels, one step at a time, calm and composed.
I was done with this farce.
I had just walked out of the ballroom, planning to leave, when Ethan’s voice rang out. “Lianne!”
Lianne’s POV:
I didn’t even spare Ethan a glance as I headed straight for the car waiting by the curb.
“Lianne, stop!” Ethan hurried after me, bracing one hand against the car door to cut off my way.

I finally stopped and turned to him with a mocking expression. “Shouldn’t you be at the hospital with your precious true love? Or did Ivy recover so fast that she doesn’t need you fussing around her anymore?”
Ethan’s brows drew tightly together. “I had the driver take her. I need to talk to you.”
“I have nothing to say to you.” I let out a cold laugh and reached out to shove him aside. “Move. I’m going home.”
“Lianne, don’t do this.” He tried to catch my wrist, his voice carrying an almost pleading note.
I pulled my hand back sharply, my gaze freezing over. “Don’t touch me! Ethan, do you really think I’ll still come whenever you call, like I used to? Did you come here to speak for Ivy? Do you think I embarrassed her tonight?”
“I don’t.” He denied it immediately, but a trace of conflict flashed through his eyes. Then, without warning, he stepped forward and pulled me into his arms.
His broad chest pressed hard against me, and the heat of his body seeped through the thin fabric of my dress, wrapped in a fierce, possessive force.
“Let go!” I struggled, shoving hard at his arms.
“No.” He lowered his head and buried his face against my neck, breathing in my scent as though he could never get enough.
The light scrape of his stubble brushed my sensitive skin and sent a tremor through my body.
At a moment like this, that closeness felt unbearably ironic.
“Lianne, let me explain.”
“Explain what?” I stopped struggling all at once, my voice calm and cold. “Explain how you kept spending night after night with Ivy?”
I turned to face him, meeting his eyes as I laid out, piece by piece, all the anger and hurt I had held in for so long.
“Ethan, this is over. From now on, I’ll only keep up appearances with you in front of Harold and help maintain your absurd image of a perfect family. As for what you do behind closed doors, go see whoever you want. Even if you bring Ivy home, I won’t even look.”
“I’m not ending this.” His voice roughened into a low growl, and a trace of feeling surfaced in his eyes. “You’re the mate fate chose for me. My grandfather would never accept us breaking our bond. You gave him your word.”
