Chapter 689:
Silas, however, was the complete opposite. He stayed a few steps away with a stubborn frown on his little face. Even though his eyes were filled with longing, he stubbornly mimicked his father’s reserved, proud demeanor, refusing to come any closer.
He really was Ethan’s miniature version.
“Silas, come here and let Mommy give you a kiss.” I reached over, pulled him into my arms, and kissed him right between his eyebrows.
“Mom, stop! I don’t want a kiss!” His cheeks turned red as he struggled free, clearly embarrassed.
At last, the heavy atmosphere in the room melted away, replaced by the children’s playful squabbling.
After ending his phone call, Ethan returned to the dining room. His eyes rested on me for a brief moment before he said in his usual calm tone, “Jeremy just called. The flights to Brinewick have been booked.”
It took me a moment to realize he’d been speaking with Jeremy.
Our eyes locked, his sharp gaze seeming to see straight through me. “Jeremy said he pressured you into going on this trip. Lianne, did you really agree because you had no choice?”
The unexpected question made my heart skip a beat.
Under the steady, searching gaze of those deep eyes that seemed to see into my heart, I couldn’t bring myself to lie. I quietly nodded.
I had to admit, Tracy and Jeremy were efficient.

Even while pouring all their effort into planning next month’s wedding, they still found time to organize an entire vacation.
What surprised me even more was that Jeremy had gone to Alex to ask for a full week of paid leave on my behalf. He’d framed it so flawlessly that Alex couldn’t come up with a single reason to refuse.
The following morning, Tracy excitedly created a group chat for everyone going on the trip.
I was rubbing my temples and laughing at the ridiculously cheesy group name, “The Loving Family,” when Silas suddenly began flooding the chat with messages.
He and Tracy immediately started a heated texting war, with Silas repeatedly demanding she change the childish name.
The night before, after putting the children to bed, I had insisted on going back to my apartment.
Once I’d sobered up, I needed some time alone to sort through everything that had happened.
Morning sunlight streamed through the window as I got dressed. I was about to zip up my suitcase when I got a message from Tracy. “Stop dragging your feet. Ethan’s been downstairs waiting for almost an hour.”
My heart gave a sudden jolt. I quickly walked to the window and carefully pulled back the curtain.
Just as she’d said, Ethan’s familiar black SUV was parked beneath the shade of a nearby tree.
I grabbed my suitcase in a hurry and rushed to the door, assuming he was waiting in the car. But the moment I pulled the door open, I found Ethan standing right outside my apartment.
The motion-sensor light overhead flickered to life, casting a warm glow over his tall frame and illuminating his striking face, which looked faintly tired.
“I’ll take that.” His deep voice was calm as he effortlessly took the suitcase from my hand.
