Chapter 868:
Lianne’s POV
I recognized that place Ethan was in. When my father passed, I acted the exact same way, like a cornered, wounded creature. I snapped at anyone who came near and sealed myself off from everything.
That was why, no matter how cold or hurtful Ethan’s words were, I couldn’t find it in myself to resent him.
Keeping my voice as gentle as I could, I spoke cautiously. “Ethan, I know you’re hurting right now. I won’t say anything. I’ll just stay by your side, okay?”
His breathing became noticeably heavier, and when he answered, his voice was edged with frustration. “I told you I don’t need that! Why can’t you understand? I just want to be left alone! Can you please stop pushing me?”
I could hear the strain in every breath he took, as though he were desperately trying to keep his emotions under control.
Clutching my phone tightly, I drew in a slow breath before replying softly, “Okay. I won’t bother you anymore. I’ll wait for you at home. Whenever you’re ready to come back, I’ll be there.”
He gave no reply. The call ended the next second.
Listening to the monotonous busy tone, I slowly lowered my phone. It felt as though a piece of my heart had been hollowed out.
Turning away from the hospital, I walked off with heavy, dragging steps.
I told myself it was alright. I wouldn’t interrupt him. I wouldn’t become another burden weighing on him. I’d stay home and wait for him quietly. No matter what, he would come home.
Ethan’s POV
The day we buried Rola, the sky was blanketed with thick gray clouds, as though rain could begin falling at any moment.

I laid her to rest beside Harold. Their graves stood shoulder to shoulder, as though they had finally found each other again.
I remained standing before the headstones, watching the guards smooth the last layer of earth over the grave. Inside me, there was nothing but emptiness, like an abandoned house stripped of everything that had once given it warmth.
The endless days of anxiety and sleepless nights had completely worn me down. By the time the funeral arrived, I had become almost numb to everything happening around me.
I hadn’t allowed Lianne to come. Instead, I had called Jeremy to accompany me.
He arrived not long after, dressed in a black suit. Without asking a single unnecessary question, he quietly took over the countless arrangements that needed to be handled.
With him there, the burden on my shoulders eased considerably.
After the funeral arrangements were finished, Jeremy walked me back to the car. Resting one hand against the door, he studied my exhausted face before letting out a quiet sigh. “Go home and get some rest,” he said. “Lianne and the children are waiting for you.”
For just a moment, my heart wavered. Lianne’s gentle eyes flashed through my mind, followed by the image of her quietly waiting for me at home. I almost agreed.
Instead, I forced myself to say, “Take me to Voss Group.”
Jeremy frowned immediately. “You’re serious?” he asked. “Look at yourself. In your condition, what do you expect to accomplish at the office?”
I remained silent. I couldn’t go home. I couldn’t face Lianne.
